Sinner stops Novak in Roland Garros semifinal – Novak Djokovic

The 2025 Miami Open is underway, and Wednesday’s play featured the bottom half of the draw playing their round of 128 matches.

There were no seeds in action as they all received a bye, but some interesting matches were still played. Notably, there’ll be no Djokovic vs Medjedovic in round 2 after Rinky Hijikata staged a comeback from a breakdown in the deciding set to upset the promising young Serb.

Nick Kyrgios, returning via a protected ranking after a long injury layoff, delivered a dramatic three-set victory to bag his first win in two years as he took out Mackie McDonald 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Gael Monfils also collected another impressive win, taking out last year’s quarter-finalist, Fabian Marozsan, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Monfils Moves On

Gael Monfils collected another impressive on Wednesday when he became the second-oldest man to snag a victory at the ATP Masters 1000 event, trailing only the legendary Jimmy Connors.

The Frenchman is 12-4 so far in 2025 but was a slight underdog when he faced last year’s quarter-finalist Fabian Marozsan, but in typical Monfils manic style, he came through in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 thriller.

I hit some different angles and showed I could run and anticipate. I made it hard [for him]. I hit with a bit more depth in my shots and did not let him dictate and I think I did well. Monfils on his win in Miami.

Kyrgios Makes Comeback Win

kyrgios miamikyrgios miami

Nick Kyrgios is back in the winner’s circle for the first time since 2022. The Aussie has had 18 months of injury woes, and he clawed his way past American qualifier Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

After retiring in his Indian Wells opener earlier this month, there were more question marks around his wrist, and the rust was evident. McDonald is not the sort of guy you want to play when you’re short on matches as he’s a great ball striker, so it was a nervy encounter, but Kyrgios found his groove on serve, landing 14 aces to set up a 2nd round tie against Karen Khachanov.

It’s been a long journey. Even to just get to the start line of matches and be scared to just finish them… But to come off and get a win, feeling like I belong again, is pretty special. The way my wrist has pulled up the last six months hasn’t been great. Having a win against Mackie before gave me experience to draw from, but he’s so tricky, he definitely caught me off guard. I walked on the court and I wasn’t used to that ball speed again. Kyrgios on his 1st win in 2025.

Other Matches of Note

Alexander Bublik has been testing a new racket, and it appears to have helped him crack the outdoor code in 2025, nabbing his first tour-level win on the surface this year with a tidy 6-3, 6-4 takedown of Sebastian Baez.

Elsewhere, former Miami Open semi-finalist David Goffin showed he’s still game, taking out Aleksandar Vukic, battling back from a set down to clinch a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. He faces Alcaraz in round 2.

Rinky Hijikata pulled off gutsy 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 upset over Hamad Medjedovic. The Aussie scrapped his way through a rollercoaster three-setter, setting up a second-round showdown with Novak Djokovic.
