The New York Mets did what they do best on Thursday — find a way to win. New York got by the Washington Nationals, 4-3, to sweep the series and strengthen its stronghold over the National League East.
The Mets’ latest victory was one they almost let slip away. Washington scored three in the top of the ninth inning, almost getting the game into extra innings after New York led all the way through to that point.
New York opened the game with three quick runs thanks to one swing of the bat by Jeff McNeil. The second baseman rocketed a pitch over the right field fence with two runners on base and two outs in the bottom of the first.
McNeil’s home run was only his seventh of the season, but continued his powerful month with his fourth in June. He now has 22 RBI.
