California-residing, Cork, Ireland-born, undefeated ‘King’ Callum Walsh, (12-0, 10 KOs), is set to headline a St. Patrick’s Day weekend at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, March 16.
It’s being dubbed the biggest Irish boxing card in New York City history. For the third time in his last five fights, Callum Walsh will punch into work in the most famous arena in the world.
Walsh meets ‘Deadly’ Dean Sutherland, (19-1, 7 KOs), of Aberdeen, Scotland.
The tough and talented Irish scrapper will be making the 3rd defence of his WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight title.
Walsh has been perfect in 12 outings (with 10 KO’s) since he started to punch for pay at the end of 2021. A crowd favourite who mixes good boxing skills with an aggressive, ‘looking to end it’ style; Walsh is must-see TV for fight fans.
Dean Sutherland enters the fight off a strong 2024, during which he went 4-0, with 2 KOs. While Sutherland doesn’t have the power of Walsh, at least on paper, he does sport an impressive 19 wins in 20 outings.
Other Irish fighters on the card are Dublin super middleweight Emmet Brennan, (5-0, 1 KO), County Kerry’s Kevin ‘The Kingdom Warrior’ Cronin, (8-2-1,4 KO’s), ‘Fearless’ Feargal McCrory, (16-1, 8 KO’s), Dublin heavyweight Thomas ‘The Bomber’ Carty, (10-0, 9 KO’s) and featherweight Donagh Keary will make his featherweight pro debut.
Walsh, cornered by Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, and promoted by Tom Loeffler’s “360 Promotions”, is looking to make a splash every time he steps through the ropes and is willing to fight anyone, anywhere to do it.
New York City has a long, storied Irish heritage and a long-storied boxing heritage. So, Walsh is more than happy to host the party.
In recent interviews, Walsh, 23, made it clear that he was excited to be back in ‘The Big Apple’ and is looking to put on a good show.
“It’s a thrill to be fighting back at Madison Square Garden for the 3rd time and again on St Patrick’s Day weekend,” said Walsh. “I’ll be ready to put on a show for the biggest Irish celebration in New York City.”
While Sutherland knows Walsh is the fast-rising star, he has plans to surprise a few people when they meet.
“I’m headed to New York City for victory in front of the Irish boxing fans on Sunday, March 16. My winning streak of six fights in a row will continue as I move up in the rankings and win the WBC Continental Americas title,” said Sutherland recently.
Added promoter Loeffler, “This fight provides Callum another opportunity to prove that he is the best and most marketable young fighter in boxing”, he said.
