Mason Greenwood’s England career is officially over, with the Marseille striker switching his allegiance to Jamaica.
Greenwood has won just one senior England cap, which came in September 2020 in a UEFA Nations League game against Iceland.
However, his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour in January 2022 effectively ended his hopes of England selection, while also bringing his Manchester United career to a close.
Greenwood was loaned to LaLiga side Getafe in 2023 before joining Marseille last July.
He has been in sparkling form for Marseille, scoring 15 goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches, but there is no chance of a recall for the Three Lions when Thomas Tuchel names his first squad next Friday, with Jamaica now his focus at international level.
Greenwood is of Jamaican descent and reportedly started the process of switching allegiance last August. Asked about Greenwood, Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham confirmed Greenwood had formally applied to make the move to play for Jamaica, making him ineligible to feature for England again.
Speaking at the unveiling of the FA’s strategy for 2024 to 2028, Bullingham said of Greenwood: “So my understanding, and I’d have to double check my understanding, is he’s asked to switch. That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to [play for England] because you can only switch once.”
Bullingham added that Greenwood had never been told he had no future with England.
“I know people asked Gareth [Southgate] about him and Gareth was up front in that he hadn’t been in his thinking, because he hadn’t been performing at that level, so I’m not aware of any communication we had with him,” Bullingham explained.
“I don’t think there was ever a request or anything like that. It just wasn’t one we got to, so it’s a personal decision by him.”
The upcoming international window will see Jamaica face Saint Vincent and The Grenadines in a two-legged tie as part of qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
