Once Ruben Amorim took over Manchester United, he first decided to concentrate on the wingback position, with previous managers all preferring full-backs.

The Red Devils had two versatile right-backs in Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, with both able to play on either flank. Luke Shaw remained sidelined while academy ace Harry Amass was also there to provide backup if needed.

Initially, the Portuguese tactician tried Amad and Antony in that position before opting to switch his Portuguese compatriot to the right while choosing to bring in Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu in January.

There have been recent reports that Amorim might not strengthen the right wingback position as he is satisfied with Dalot. While the Portugal international can be lauded for his availability and determination, he is not a wingback.

Amorim wants right wingback

Which is why Givemesport have now claimed that the former Sporting CP boss is prepared to complete a U-turn and ask INEOS for a right wingback once the window opens.

Long-term target Vanderson of Monaco seems to be back on the club’s radar with the Ligue 1 side prepared to let the Brazilian leave for £30 million.

The 23-year-old has two goals and five assists this season and his pace and power has attracted the interest of plenty of England’s big wigs with Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and even Manchester City impressed with the former Gremio ace.

Not only will the “phenomenal” Brazilian international add a whole new attacking dimension to United’s wingplay, but his arrival will also allow Amad to play further forward, where he is most dangerous.

United will try for Vanderson

There were murmurs that the Ivorian might be asked to play as a wingback but clearly, he is much more of a threat when playing as one of the attacking midfielders. It will also allow Mazraoui to be shifted to the right centre-back position.

“Amorim is weighing up a move to sign Vanderson for Manchester United, according to GMS sources, after being alerted to his situation when preparing to make a final decision on whether to bring in a new right wing-back option ahead of his first full season in the Old Trafford dugout.

“Although the Brazil international still has three years remaining on a contract which allows him to pocket close to £50,000-per-week at Monaco, the Red Devils are keeping tabs on his future and could head to the negotiating table as they aim to upgrade their options.

Vanderson is in demand

“GMS sources have been informed that Manchester United are considering a swoop for Vanderson, who has highlighted his attacking threat by registering seven goal involvements in all competitions this season, as it is increasingly likely that he will be allowed to leave his current surroundings for £30 million.

“Manchester United would prefer to deploy Amad Diallo in an attacking role and Noussair Mazraoui as one of three central defenders, GMS sources have learned, leading to Vanderson being eyed as it has also been decided that Diogo Dalot is not an ideal option as a regular starter at right wing-back.”

It is clear that INEOS will prioritise attacking signings before shifting focus to the middle of the park. Only then will they think of strengthening at the back.

While funds are tight at present, and player sales are needed for further incomings, Europa League success could change all that and Amorim will look to deliver on May 21 against rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
