Manchester United are expected to undergo a revamp in defence once the season concludes with both Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans on their way out.

The Swede is attracting a lot of interest while Championship sides are eyeing the United veteran while an offer to stay on as coach at the Red Devils is also on the cards.

With Lisandro Martinez ruled out till next year and Ruben Amorim mulling over changing his position, there is an obvious need to strengthen at the back.

Whether United have the necessary funds to do that remains to be seen but as per reports in Spain, the 20-time English league champions could try and sign Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo provided they qualify for the Champions League.

Defensive reinforcements on the cards

The Uruguayan is not going to be cheap, given his release clause of €65 million. And he recently signed a contract extension until 2031.

But some at Camp Nou feel a high bid could be worth evaluating given the emergence of Pau Cubarsí and the strong performance of Iñigo Martínez.

The 26-year-old has started a mere 14 games in all competitions, completing 90 minutes only nine times. Even though Hansi Flick values his leadership at the back, his prominence has decreased.

The player is also open to an exit in case a good sporting and financial offer is presented. United are ready to make him “the cornerstone” of their new defensive project.

“The English club is planning an ambitious transfer window, and one of the names highlighted is centre-back Ronald Araujo. If they qualify for the Champions League, United would be willing to submit an offer in excess of €70 million.

“At Camp Nou, the Araujo case divides opinions. On the one hand, Hansi Flick values his leadership and versatility, but on the other, his constant substitution this season raises doubts about his fit into the project.

Big offer for Araujo

“Araujo’s sale would also provide financial relief for a club still constrained by Financial Fair Play restrictions. Despite the renewal, a significant offer from England could be considered.

“The player’s entourage has kept a low profile, but it’s clear the lack of continuity is causing him concern. Araujo wants to feel important, and if Barça doesn’t guarantee him that role, he could consider a change of scenery. United, with Amorim at the helm and a revived project, could be an attractive alternative both sportingly and financially.”

A lot will depend on the final budget but United are likely to focus on strengthening up top and in the middle of the pitch over defensive improvements.

So for now, take this report with a huge pinch of salt. Araujo’s current form does not merit such an extensive outlay while his release clause and the amount mentioned in the report also do not tally.
