Ruben Amorim could do with added creativity behind the central striker and as per recent reports, Manchester United are eyeing an attacking midfielder capable of picking the lock in the summer.
A striker is expected to be the club’s first port of call once the summer window opens, after which INEOS are likely to try and add a creative force as well.
The head coach seems happy to play Bruno Fernandes as a deep-lying playmaker, necessitating the need for such a player with The Peoples Person relaying United’s interest in Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Brazilian ace has 15 goals and four assists and has impressed Amorim with his eye for a goal and ability to play in multiple positions.
Cunha has his flaws
However, he has a massive release clause worth £62.5 million, a fee the Red Devils could struggle to pay given the current financial crisis.
Givemesport have added that the former Atletico Madrid ace’s temperament is another concern with the 25-year-old currently serving a four-match suspension for violent conduct.
Which is why the 20-time English league champions are prepared to move on to Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo who has an even better record than the Brazil international while he will also not cost as much.
The Cameroonian has 16 goals and six assists this season and the Bees are likely to demand around £50 million to let him go given his importance to Thomas Frank’s plans.
“Manchester United are refusing to rule out the possibility of attempting to sign Bryan Mbeumo if they fail to land Wolverhampton Wanderers talisman Matheus Cunha as the Brentford star has worked his way onto the radar of the Old Trafford recruitment department, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.
Mbeumo seen as a more effective option
“Manchester United are refusing to solely focus on their pursuit of Cunha as it has been acknowledged behind the scenes that they may need Champions League qualification and to sanction departures to meet his release clause, GMS sources have learned, while there are concerns over his discipline.
“GMS sources have been informed that Manchester United have been put on red alert as a result of the data they have received on Mbeumo’s displays this season, leading to there being increasing confidence that he would give Amorim’s side more of a clinical edge if he makes the switch during the transfer window.”
The Cameroon international’s current deal is valid for only one more year and there is a possibility interested clubs could acquire him for a cut-price fee which will suit INEOS.
Whether they can get a deal for either of the two over the line remains to be seen. A lot will depend on the final transfer budget with European qualification seen as key to an enhanced war chest.
