Manchester United look set to engage in a heated battle with Bayern Munich to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.
One of Palace’s key players last season, Eze emerged as a transfer target for Man United in late May.
Eze has since been increasingly mentioned, given the standoff between United and Brentford over the transfer fee for Bryan Mbeumo.
While the likes of Paul Scholes are looking to encourage United to make a move, it appears as if United’s pursuit of the English playmaker could become more challenging if a fresh update is to be believed.
BBC reported that Bayern are looking to compete with United for Eze’s signature.
“Eze is likely to be in demand this summer, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United reportedly among the clubs interested in triggering his £68m release clause,” the report read.
“His 14 goals in all competitions included the FA Cup final winner as the club earned a first major trophy. No player in Europe’s top five leagues registered more goal involvements across all competitions than Eze after the March international break,” the article continued, highlighting exactly why he would be a valuable asset for United next season.
“Also prominent on that list is Eze’s good friend and former team-mate Michael Olise, who was last month voted as the Bundesliga’s rookie of the season for 2024-25 after a superb first year with Bayern Munich. Their proven partnership on the pitch may well pique Bayern’s interest,” the article noted.
It appears as if Bayern could have an edge given the fact that Olise is not only a former teammate of Eze but a transfer success, having already won silverware with the German giants in the form of the Bundesliga title last season.
Eze could end up being a major asset to United should manager Ruben Amorim find a way to convince him to stay in England rather than moving to Munich.
He scored eight goals and made eight assists in 34 Premier League matches last season. In addition to being a proven Premier League talent, Eze helped his club to win the FA Cup for the first time in their history.
But even if United are unsuccessful in their pursuit, several alternatives remain on the table.
Mbeumo remains a target despite the impasse in negotiations, while Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth has also been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Whoever United choose to sign, it remains imperative that they seek out proven Premier League players so as to avoid repeating past transfer flops. After all, the English top flight requires a level of intensity that few, if any, other leagues can live up to.
