Manchester City open talks for Eintracht’s Hugo Larsson

‘Winning the Club World Cup would be massive for Chelsea, and not just for the trophy – £100m in prize money would help them against other Premier League clubs’ Former Blues star explains why tournament could turbo-charge their progress

According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, Manchester City have held initial talks over the potential transfer of Hugo Larsson from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.

Frequently described as a “complete midfielder” at the age of 20, Larsson prefers to play in a central, box-to-box role, though he’s quite capable of operating as a No. 6 as well, providing extra protection for the defensive line. He joined Eintracht from Malmo FF in 2023, reportedly for €9million, and this season, he has made a total of 38 appearances in all competitions for the club so far, scoring six goals and providing one assist.

With Larsson’s contract running until 2029, Eintracht sporting director Markus Krosche demands a fee of €60million for his services.

Meanwhile, City’s title defending campaign in the Premier League is in tatters, with Pep Guardiola’s side significantly losing momentum when Rodri tore his ACL early in the season. Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva aren’t anywhere near the levels of previous years, and the same goes for Ilkay Gundogan whose return from Barcelona last summer brought much less than City would’ve hoped for. Nico Gonzalez may yet prove his arrival this January wasn’t a waste of money, but he hasn’t done much yet, and the influence of Mateo Kovacic has melted away through striving to plug too many gaps.

A proposed arrival of Larsson would obviously provide Guardiola with a midfield option for years to come.
