Manchester United Women’s manager Marc Skinner is edging closer to signing a new deal at the club.

The former Birmingham head coach is now the longest-serving manager in the Women’s Super League as he has been in the United hot seat for four years.

His current deal expires in June with the club having the option to extend it by an additional year before the end of March.

In an interview with Sky Sports, he claimed that he definitely wanted to stay at the Leigh Sports Village for the foreseeable future.

He stated, “I’ve never been more sure. Every win, every loss makes me more convinced. I’ll know when it’s time. I want to win things here. I want to compete in the Champions League. I want to keep pushing standards of training. The fire is there.”

Elaborating on the progress that has been made over a new deal he claimed, “the club have an option on my contract and we are currently in conversation around that, plus an extension. There’s been really positive conversations. We’ve got unfinished business.”

Skinner’s side find themselves in third place in the league this season and on course to qualify for the Champions League.

He said that the team has always had the same “core values” but that this year is different as they are experiencing the season with younger, fresher players in the squad.

“The players have always been focussed on winning for Man United, that’s in the DNA, but with youthfulness comes fearlessness. This is the same show with a different cast. The cast have brought something new.”

The 41 year old also defended his style that can be seen as a little pragmatic at times.

“To be vulnerable, I hope results have convinced fans we’re trying to do things the right way. I’ve become more pragmatic with experience. It isn’t nice as the manager [to get criticism]. I hope fans will remember the good times too, like winning our first major trophy at Wembley.”

Skinner also went into detail that his role as a manager is to be in constant communication with his players and to also discuss aspects on a deeper level.

While he claimed he wanted his team and players to have fun, “we’re still serious about winning. To be a footballer in a high-performance environment it’s every waking hour and every sleeping hour, we don’t rest.”

The interview backs up one he gave to The BBC recently, when he also stated his desire to play for “the best club in the world”.
