Manchester United are hoping to pay off Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause in instalments.

The Red Devils, according to numerous sources, have honed in on Cunha as the main target for the number 10 position.

The Brazilian has had a fantastic season, scoring 16 goals for Wolves. Which is why fans were so excited when news broke on Monday that United were “inching” closer to agreeing a deal with the forward.

What’s more, Fabrizio Romano has reported that there have been “very positive” meetings between United and Cunha and that the situation is advancing rapidly.

Cunha has a release clause of £62.5 million written into a contract he signed in February and The Telegraph report that “Manchester United are hoping to pay for Matheus Cunha, the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, in instalments.”

With numerous positions to purchase this summer and financial difficulties, United will most likely need to be more flexible this transfer window than they ever have been, if they are to have success.

Paying off a release clause in one bundle would certainly impact the club’s ability to spend in other areas, so ensuring only part of the fee counts in this financial year could be vital to United’s capacity to spend on other players.

What’s more, having made a financial loss in six of the previous seven seasons, the Premier League will certainly be keeping a close eye on their spending this summer to ensure they do not breach any financial fair play rules.

Luckily for Ruben Amorim’s side, “it is understood that Wolves would be open to a split payment for Cunha.”

The Molineux club’s readiness to do a deal under such conditions could certainly prove key to United’s success of completing the move.

Cunha for his part has already claimed in the past that it is in an honour to be linked to a club like Manchester United.

The Brazil international was also perceived to be demonstrating his affection for the club through various actions on Sunday. He was captured on video, rubbing the Old Trafford turf into his legs and also waving to home fans as he left the pitch during Wolves’ 1-0 win against United.
