Manchester United are closely monitoring Ollie Watkins as their potential new lead striker this summer, with the move heavily dependent on the outcome of Rasmus Hojlund’s future at Old Trafford, according to Football Insider.

Ruben Amorim is looking to revamp his attack this summer after the failures of last season.

The Red Devils finished the Premier League season with a negative goal difference which shows that there is a desperate need of a new attacker at Old Trafford.

Both Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have failed to have the desired impact since joining the club.

Man United want a new striker to lead their attack

Amorim and the United hierarchy have decided that in order to reclaim their place at the top of English football, they need a new number nine to lead their attack.

They have been closely monitoring Watkins this summer but a move depends on the outcome of Hojlund’s future at the club.

United are prepared to take a financial hit on Hojlund if a suitable offer arrives, recognising the need to clear space in the squad and on the wage bill to bring in a proven Premier League striker who can deliver immediately.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider:

“If Man United are looking at a good centre-forward to come in and improve their squad, Ollie Watkins would tick a lot of boxes.

“Rasmus Hojlund… a lot will depend on what happens with him, because United probably can’t afford to go out and buy Watkins on top of Mbuemo and Cunha.”

The Red Devils are also motivated to move quickly for Watkins to fend off interest from Arsenal, who are monitoring the striker as an alternative to their other targets.

Should Hojlund depart, Watkins would be positioned to lead United’s frontline and become a statement signing under Amorim, signaling the club’s ambition to return to the top of English football while addressing one of their most pressing needs.

The Villa striker may not be a long term solution for the Red Devils but he is someone who can transform their attack and bring goal scoring quality that they desperately need.
