On April 28, 2025, a nationwide power outage across Spain and Portugal brought the Madrid Open to a standstill at the Caja Mágica.
The blackout disrupted critical systems, including electronic line-calling, scoreboards, and overhead cameras, forcing a suspension of play.
After waiting nearly four hours, tournament organisers finally cancelled the remaining day session matches and all night session play.
Only one match was completed on the men’s side: Matteo Arnaldi defeating Damir Dzhumur 6-3, 6-4.
Grigor Dimitrov was the only other match to start, and after squandering a match point earlier in the second set at 5-2 (30-40), the Bulgarian led 6-4, 5-4 when a nationwide power outage struck.
Fearnley had just broken Dimitrov to get back on serve in the second set when the Chair Umpire Adel Nour sent both players off the court to wait out the delay. Play was then cancelled for the day, and the players did not return.
