The 2025 Mutua Madrid Open hit its stride on day nine, delivering plenty of action as all four men’s quarter-finals played out at La Caja Mágica.

From Casper Ruud proving his clay-court prowess to Jack Draper’s hammering of Arnaldi, Francisco Cerúndolo’s hard-fought comeback, and Lorenzo Musetti’s mental toughness, the stage is now set for Friday’s semi-finals.

Ruud Handles Medvedev

ruud madridruud madrid

Casper Ruud was one of my picks for the title in Madrid, and he came through an aggressive Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-5.

Medvedev opted for a fairly attacking style, even approaching the net, which is not his usual game plan. I think in the future, he’ll need to do that rather than trying to outlast opponents by grinding, as I believe his physical abilities have declined ever so slightly.

Ruud is just the better clay court player, and I thought he played solidly, without dropping serve. The win gives him a bit of a rankings boost for the French Open too, following his failure to defend his Barcelona title.

I looked at our stats last night and saw he beat me on grass, outdoor hard and indoor hard. The last surface was clay so I thought ‘Please don’t make it 4-0′. I tried to use the surface to my advantage. I thought the level was pretty good from both players, I was impressed with Daniil’s ability to produce power here on clay. Today it felt like he was decisive and firing from the forehand, he hit some great winners. He didn’t bring what I expected. Ruud on his win.

Highlights

Cerundolo Conquers Mensik

cerundolo maridcerundolo marid

Francisco Cerundolo fought back to beat Jakub Menšík 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, ending the Miami champion’s nine-match Masters 1000 win streak.

The Argentine saved a key break point at 5-5 in the second set, powering through a two-hour, 11-minute battle to reach his second Masters 1000 semi-final.

Cerundolo has been accumulating match wins this season, now boasting 24 wins, tied with de Minaur and Alcaraz; however, he lacks a big title as the ultimate achievement. Can it happen in Madrid? Maybe but I don’t think so, as I think Ruud beats him in the last four.

I’m tired, I ran a lot today… He was hitting amazing shots, super powerful, I’m super happy with what I did today, because it was a really difficult match. I was never in control, I was really digging and fighting. Cerundolo on his win.

Highlights

Draper Aces Arnaldi

draperdraper

Jack Draper delivered another commanding performance on Thursday, hammering Matteo Arnaldi 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

The match, lasting 77 minutes, saw Draper in top form, as he faced not a single break point, and he was able to crush the ball from the baseline, leaving Arnaldi scrambling.

There were question marks about his game on clay, and although Madrid is perhaps not “true” clay court tennis venue, his run in Madrid has been impressive, with wins over Tallon Griekspoor, Matteo Berrettini, Tommy Paul, and now Arnaldi. His ability to dictate play and finish points quickly, especially with his powerful lefty serve + forehand, has been key, and he has a decent shot at winning his second Masters 1000 title this season.

The last couple of years coming onto the clay I felt against these guys I’d always be the one on the back foot, I’d always be the one defending. The next part of my game was just getting strong, getting more capable physically to do the things I know I can do and bully these guys. My forehand is doing a lot of damage and I want to keep it up. I have been doing everything in all areas pretty well and am excited to keep on going. Hopefully it keeps coming together. I am just well prepared. I work really hard every day and do all the right things off the court and on the court. When I go out to play I have a feeling it is going to be OK because I have prepared so well. I know I can win any match and lose any match. I am fearful I could lose but that helps me compete the way I do. Draper on his clay court game.

Musetti Delivers Against Diallo

musetti madridmusetti madrid

Lorenzo Musetti had the easiest quarter-final on paper, and I think he knew that, as he didn’t play at his usual level but still had too much for lucky loser Gabriel Diallo, winning 6-4, 6-3.

The Italian had produced a lot of entertaining tennis this week. Although today wasn’t the sort of shotmaking we saw against Tsitsipas, he held firm under pressure, saving four break points while serving for the first set at 5-4 and breaking Diallo early in the second to get the job done comfortably.

He’s now guaranteed a Top 10 debut, and you’d have to think he’ll be the only guy with a one-handed backhand to achieve that feat for a long time, as there’s nobody else even close.

I probably didn’t show my best tennis, but the important thing of this match was to take the win no matter how I was playing. Of course I didn’t feel the ball like yesterday night, but I knew it already stepping on court that today was a tough match, especially on the mental side, so I think I managed to stay there and stay focussed through the last point. Proud to be in the semis. Musetti on his win.
