On Friday at the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open, Casper Ruud and Jack Draper secured their final place with hard-fought semi-final victories at the Caja Magica.

Ruud overcame Francisco Cerundolo, while Draper defeated Lorenzo Musetti, setting up their first Head2Head meeting in Sunday’s championship match.

With both players showing resolve and skill to reach the final, here’s a detailed look at how Day 10 played out with a recap, match stats and highlights.

Ruud Rallies Past Cerundolo

Casper Ruud defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 7-5 on Friday to secure a spot in the final at the Caja Magica.

I expected Ruud to win comfortably, but despite the straightforward-looking score, it was no walk in the park as Ruud faced 18 break points. Saving fifteen of them.

Heading into the semi-final, Ruud was on the back foot, having lost his last two encounters with Cerundolo, including a straight-sets defeat in Miami earlier this year, but I think he’s looked improved this week.

He survived a 0/40 scare in the opening game, got treatment for his rib from the physio after the third game, and then seized the first set with a critical break in the 10th game.

The second set was a rollercoaster, with both players struggling to hold serve, resulting in five breaks. In game five, Ruud fended off all seven break points to edge ahead 3-2.

Although he dropped his next service game, he regrouped to win four of the final five games from 3-4 down to seal his spot in the final, and he’s yet to drop a set.

Cerundolo will leave disappointed not to do more with the 18 break chances he created, which is a crazy amount and topped off by the fact that before this match, he was #2 on the stats leaderboard for break point conversion rate this season.

I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to finish the match, honestly. I felt something in my rib during the warm up, just towards the end before going out [on court], and I felt it in nearly every shot, especially the serve. Luckily, I got some quick treatment on it. There’s not too much you can do, you only have three minutes [with the physio]. So I will go and check it out more now. I got a couple of painkillers, which is not the ideal thing, but at the same time in a situation like this, you have to do that now and then. I was able to just play one game at a time really. It was easing and getting better as the match went on. Ruud on his early injury.

Draper Mutes Musetti

draperdraper

Jack Draper fired his way into the Mutua Madrid Open on Friday evening, dispatching Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6(4).

The lefty has been in tremendous form this week, with his baseline game locked in and his newfound confidence on clay palpable. Like Ruud, he has yet to drop a set en route to the final.

Draper’s groundstrokes were dialled in, applying constant pressure on Musetti and offering the Italian few chances to counter.

Some of his forehands were hit with such depth and spin that they looked to be flying long but dipped inside the baseline at the last second, leaving the Italian with no chance.

In the second set, I thought Musetti raised his game and started having more success when things got physical as Draper began to get to a few balls a bit later than in the first set. However, he countered that by throwing in some serve and volley on serve, saving a break point in game seven.

Even in the crucible of a second-set tie-break, the 23-year-old stayed composed and found an extra gear to capture an early mini break and ride it out to secure the victory.

For Musetti, this marked his second ATP Masters 1000 semi-final of the European clay swing, following a runner-up finish in Monte-Carlo, and he heads into his home tournament in Rome next week in good form.

It felt like every point was a big moment. I felt the level was really high from both of us. Lorenzo is a different animal on the clay but he has also grown since I last played him, with the results he has had, so it was a really good challenge as to how far we have both come. I just tried to stay present. I had chances. I felt I went a bit passive in moments and at this level against that calibre of opponent, he is not going to let you off the hook. I think I did a great job changing tactically – serve-volleying and being a bit more offensive, on the front foot. Draper on his win.
