Reality Hit Me—But Not My Last Wimbledon

Madison Keys joined Serena Williams in pulling off an impressive feat as the world No. 5 is the fifth player in the Open Era to clinch at least 15 consecutive hard-court wins after turning 30.

After going 12-0 across the Adelaide International and the Australian Open, the American – who celebrated her 30th birthday in February – also registered wins in her opening three Indian Wells matches.

Before Keys, the last player to win 15 consecutive matches on hard aged 30+ was Williams. The American tennis icon did it in late 2013 and early 2014, when she went on a run of 25 wins on hard courts in a row.

The players that have also achieved the feat include Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

Keys was close to seeing her streak end at 14 consecutive wins

After surviving a three-setter against Elise Mertens in the Indian Wells second round, the No. 5 seed earned another hard-fought victory on Wednesday after overcoming Donna Vekic 4-6 7-6 (7) 6-3. After the match, the 30-year-old acknowledged that there was a moment when she felt she was close to getting bounced in two sets.

“Donna was playing so well… At some point I felt like it was do or die. Probably at 5-5 in the second set tiebreaker. I decided I was gonna go for a bit more. Really happy to get the win,” Keys said in her on-court interview.

Before the American won the second-set tie-break, she was also 5-3 down to Vekic. Fortunately for the home favorite, she found a way to win and now has a notable feat by her name.
