Liverpool are looking to sign a new striker in the summer transfer window.

The Premier League champions are ready to invest in their squad under the leadership of manager Arne Slot this summer.

Having spent little money in his tenure at the club and still delivered success, the Dutch manager has earned the trust of the Liverpool hierarchy.

They are ready to back the manager in the transfer market this summer with a striker being the club’s priority.

Liverpool may find it difficult to afford Isak

The Premier League champions have been linked with a move for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak but signing him might be difficult due to Newcastle’s high asking price.

Club legend Robbie Fowler has now urged the Reds to make a move for an attacker who has 171 goals in 466 appearances in his career.

Speaking to The i, Fowler has urged his former club to make a move for Aston Villa attacker Ollie Watkins.

“The problem is clubs know that they are potentially on the lookout for a number nine, so the prices will become silly,” Fowler said.

“If you look at Isak, he’s going to be £100m plus easily. He’s a wonderful player, but Liverpool may not want to pay that, and they’ll look around.”

“You could look at Ollie Watkins,” Fowler adds.

“He doesn’t really fit the model in terms of what Liverpool want, given his age, but I’d go and get him for a couple of years because he’s a tremendous player and established and experienced in the Premier League.”

29-year-old Watkins has scored 16 goals this season and provided 13 assists for Unai Emery’s side.

He has seen his playing time get affected due to the arrival of Marcus Rashford at the club this year.

The striker could be convinced to make a move to Anfield to replace Darwin Nunez.

Joining a club like Liverpool would give him the opportunity to challenge for silverware and the opportunty to become a part of the Slot project at Anfield would be too good to turn down.

He is going to cost them a significantly lower amount than their top target Isak and has experience in the Premier League that the Reds are looking for.
