Liverpool figures past and present have paid tribute following the tragic death of Diogo Jota at the age of just 28.

The Portugal international’s passing, alongside his brother Andre, has rocked the football world, with tributes now flooding in from across the game.

Among those to speak publicly are current Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez, as well as former club icons Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

The Uruguay international, who wore the No.9 shirt at Anfield last season, posted a message in Spanish on Instagram.

Translated, the 25-year-old wrote: “There are no words of comfort for so much pain. I will always remember you with your smile, as a good teammate on and off the pitch.

“I send all my strength to his family. Wherever he is, I’m sure he’ll always be with you – especially his wife and three children.”

Carragher posted via BBC News: “Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning.

“Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids.”

Gerrard added simply: “RIP Diogo. Condolences to his family and friends during this incredibly sad time.”

The duo joined Cristiano Ronaldo and so many others from the wider football community to share their tributes after this horrific event.

Jota made 182 appearances for the Reds after signing from Wolves in 2020, scoring 65 goals and providing 22 assists in all competitions.

His tenacity, pressing and goal threat were vital qualities under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, winning three trophies during his time at Anfield.

Liverpoolfc.com confirmed the tragic passing of Jota and his brother, with a short tribute shared on the club’s official website.

At such an emotional time, this is when the football world can come together to look out for each other and share tributes of a man who was loved by so many people.
