‘Do it for Diogo’ – Liverpool will have poignant motivation this season

Lionel Messi and Neymar have been an electrifying duo to watch since their days ripping past defenses side by side at Barcelona. From their formidable three at Camp Nou with Luis Suarez to their disastrous attempt at a similar partnership with Kylian Mbappe at Paris Saint-Germain, and battles on the international stage, these two superstars have seen it all.

Now, with Messi leading Inter Miami in MLS and Neymar playing for Santos in his homeland, the opportunities for these two legends to face off have become increasingly rare. Yet, fans around the world continue to wait for their next showdown—one that was set to happen sooner than expected before an unfortunate setback changed everything.

The soccer world was buzzing with anticipation for the next meeting between the former Barcelona and PSG duo, which was expected to happen in one of the sport’s most intense international rivalries. However, that reunion has now been put on hold after Brazil confirmed Neymar’s withdrawal from the squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.

The decision means that the 33-year-old will not feature against Argentina, a match that would have been one of the biggest highlights of the international break. Fans were eager to see him go head-to-head with Messi in the legendary Superclasico de las Americas, but they will now have to wait for another opportunity.

Why Neymar will miss Brazil’s March World Cup qualifiers

Brazil’s Football Confederation (CBF) issued an official statement explaining Neymar’s absence, confirming that the experienced forward is dealing with an issue in his left thigh.

After a turbulent few seasons at Paris Saint-Germain and his high-profile move to Al Hilal, Neymar has been battling persistent injuries. Despite showing flashes of brilliance at Santos since February, his fitness has not been at 100%, and the decision was made to prioritize his long-term health over short-term gains.

This news is a major setback for Brazil, as they are currently fifth in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying table and need every star player available. Without him, La Albiceleste will have a slight advantage, given that Messi’s side is currently in strong form and remains one of the favorites to top the standings.

When will Messi and Neymar meet next?

With Neymar ruled out of the World Cup Qualifiers, the next possible showdown between the two superstars could come on a different stage. One potential meeting ground could be this summer’sFIFA Club World Cup, where Messi’s Inter Miami is expected to participate.

The tournament, set to take place in June 2025, will feature top clubs from around the world, including the MLS Supporters’ Shield winners. Because Neymar’s present club isn’t participating, the only way the two icons may reunite in the tournament is if the veteran decides to leave Santos before June 30 and signs with a team that does.

Looking even further ahead, there is a strong possibility that they could meet at the 2026 World Cup, set to be held in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. By that time, the Argentine will be 39 years old, and the Brazilian will be 35, making it likely that this could be their final opportunity to face off on the biggest stage in world soccer.
