Recently hired Jacksonville Jaguars executive vice president of football operations Tony Boselli insisted that individuals within the organization “believe that we have a franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence” after Lawrence became the subject of trade rumors.
While taking questions at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, Jaguars first-year head coach Liam Coen indicated he’ll speak with Lawrence about certain roster decisions made this offseason.
“He is our guy,” Coen said about Lawrence, as shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “He’s the franchise…He’s hungry. He wants to be playing at the highest level possible. And how do we include him in some of those conversations, specifically with some of the skill players and obviously on the offensive line? So, he will definitely be involved in some of that while just being mindful of not putting too much on him, because he’s going to be learning a completely new system and having to go through a new transition again.”
While it was initially reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers had “made inquiries to the” Jaguars regarding a possible trade for Lawrence, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio later said that “the Steelers did not call the Jaguars about” the 25-year-old. Lawrence agreed to a five-year contract extension that included a no-trade clause last spring but then undeniably struggled during the 2024 season. Nevertheless, there’s no sign Jacksonville even considered making him available ahead of the upcoming draft.
As for the “new transition” Coen referenced, Lawrence is preparing to play under the third head coach he’s had since the Jaguars made him the first overall pick of the 2021 draft. Coen admitted he wants Lawrence to have more “consistency” moving forward, but the coach also hopes the signal-caller will grow from the ups and downs he experienced over his first four pro seasons.
“He can take those experiences to really dive into this new process,” Coen added. “But I think what’s critical is how do we get him to that standard and that structure and that schedule throughout his process once he gets here?”
Rumors about Lawrence’s future could hover over the Jaguars next winter if he fails to improve under Coen. For now, it sounds like Coen and Co. are committed to building around Lawrence leading up to Week 1 in September.
