Manchester United centre-back Leny Yoro provided a fascinating insight into Ruben Amorim’s training methods and how the Portuguese is a stickler when it comes to discipline even off the field.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have both faced the head coach’s wrath in that regard with the duo dropped from the Manchester derby matchday squad over concerns of their attitude outside the pitch.

And the Frenchman, in a chat with club legend Rio Ferdinand, explained that the Portuguese tactician is as involved in training as during official matches, and if someone is lazy, he “kills” that player, akin to Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous hairdryer treatment.

“In training, it’s really, I would say, hard. But it’s important for him, training is really important because you play the game like you train. The most important thing is to be really good in training.

How Amorim treats training

“If you are not working, if you are lazy in training, he won’t like you – he’ll kill you! It’s normal because, yeah, you play like you train.

“He’s really strict on this because, to win games and trophies, you need to be disciplined outside the pitch. You need to be punctual.”

There have been murmurs that Amorim had caught wind of Rashford’s habit of going out before games, which eventually led to the pair’s relationship deteriorating beyond repair.

Garnacho has come out of it as a stronger player, even going on to improve his relationship with the coach, something the Mancunian had failed to achieve. He is now on loan at Aston Villa.

Yoro has embraced that side of Amorim but that is not the only facet the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss has. As the 19-year-old revealed, Amorim is an empathetic man, who understands the trials and tribulations a modern footballer goes through.

Amorim understands modern players

“I have a good relationship with Ruben Amorim. I just try to do what he asks me to do. He’s big on communication with the players because he played at a top level.

“He’s been at a lot of clubs, so he knows your feelings when you’re not playing or when you have a bad game. He knows how to speak with you, and that’s really important for me.”

This sheds light as to why Amorim was so successful at his previous club, where he handed debuts to plenty of talented youngsters who were ready to go through a brick wall for him.

While it has been a tough start for the coach at the Red Devils, United remain alive in the FA Cup and the Europa League and hopefully, the 40-year-old can inspire the club to some sort of silverware this season.
