Leicester relegated as Alexander-Arnold returns in style

Key Juventus star rejects a move to Manchester City

Leicester City were condemned to an instant return to the Championship after Trent Alexander-Arnold rose from the bench on Easter Sunday to inspire Liverpool to victory.

The Reds were profligate in front of goal at the King Power Stadium, creating many more chances than their struggling hosts, but struggled to puncture the net in a game they were heavy favourites to win handily.

Arne Slot made three changes in the second half in a bid to find a winner, with Diogo Jota, Harvey Elliott and the right-back all entering the field of play. It was the latter who delivered just five minutes after his introduction.

Kostas Tsimikas’ corner led to a goalmouth scramble which Leicester struggled to clear. The ball landed just right for Alexander-Arnold, who hit it on the half-volley for a brilliant finish.

It was a cathartic moment for the 26-year-old, who had been criticised for his performances before sustaining an injury that had kept him sidelined from March until now. There is also the added subplot of his potential move to Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer.

For the Foxes, though, it was a painful moment that confirmed what had long been in the post. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take the struggling East Midlands outfit back to the second tier after they were officially relegated this weekend, although it’s highly unlikely the Dutchman will remain as manager beyond this season.

It’s a second relegation in three years for Leicester after they topped the Championship table last season under Enzo Maresca, who is currently in charge of Chelsea, to return to the top flight. They will join Southampton in going straight back down, while Ipswich Town could follow suit very soon.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are still on course to win the Premier League title. They remain 13 points ahead of nearest challengers Arsenal with five games remaining. They will officially be crowned champions if they beat Spurs next weekend.
