Kylian Mbappe is back with the French national team after a six-month absence, and the Real Madrid forward wasted no time in making his feelings known. Despite recent criticism regarding his form and involvement at club level, Mbappe remains central to Didier Deschamps’ plans as France prepares for their UEFA Nations League quarter-final showdown against Croatia.

His return, however, comes amid lingering questions about his performances, especially after a scrutinized display against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. Yet, Mbappe sent out a one-word message that left no doubt about his mindset, reinforcing his presence at the highest level of international football.

Mbappe’s return to the Les Bleus squad comes at a time when his performances at Real Madrid have been under intense scrutiny. In the recent Champions League Round of 16 second-leg clash against Atletico Madrid, the Frenchman played the full 120 minutes but was not the standout performer.

While he did win a penalty after an explosive run past Atletico’s defense, he was criticized for his overall display, with Spanish media suggesting he was too static and hesitant during key moments. The Spanish outlet Diario AS remarked: “Vinicius was the standout player for Ancelotti’s team, showing improvement throughout the match. Mbappe, on the other hand, was largely absent.”

Other publications questioned his involvement, with Mundo Deportivo even hinting that he hesitated when it came time to take a penalty, though he successfully converted one in the shootout. Despite the doubts cast over him, the Frenchman played a crucial role in Los Blancos’ quarter-final qualification and is now shifting his focus back to the national team.

Back in blue: Deschamps confirms Mbappe’s captaincy

After missing the last two international call-ups due to injury concerns and managerial decisions, Mbappe is back at the heart of Les Bleus’ squad for their Nations League quarter-final showdown with Croatia. His last appearance for Les Bleus came on September 9 against Belgium, and since then, questions have lingered about whether he would retain his captaincy.

However, Didier Deschamps put those doubts to rest, confirming that the winger will continue to lead the team. Speaking at a press conference, the French coach stated: “I spoke with him, I confirm it, he will be captain. It’s not my style to go further on the content of the talks.”

Deschamps also addressed concerns about Mbappe’s fitness, given that he had played 120 minutes against Atletico Madrid just days prior. However, he assured reporters that he had no doubts about his star forward’s readiness: “I don’t have any evidence today, he played 120 minutes. Sometimes I also prefer that a player doesn’t train if it allows him to play afterwards.”

What did Mbappe say?

Despite the criticism surrounding his recent form, Mbappe wasted no time in making his intentions clear upon his return to the France squad. Taking to social media, he posted an Instagram story celebrating his selection and wrote a simple but powerful one-word message: “Back.”

The statement was short, direct, and full of intent—a clear sign that Mbappe is ready to silence his critics and prove his worth once again on the international stage.
