Karim Benzema opens up on Real Madrid exit: Why he joined Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Pro League and his unexpected retirement plans

For the first time, Karim Benzema has broken his silence on why he left Real Madrid and moved to the Saudi Pro League, where Cristiano Ronaldo currently plays. The legendary French forward, who spent 14 years at the Santiago Bernabéu, also hinted at unexpected retirement plans that could see him reunite with the club that shaped his career, though not in the way most fans might expect.

Throughout Los Blancos’ history, club legends have often returned in non-playing roles. Figures like Raul and Emilio Butragueno have taken up executive and coaching positions, continuing their influence behind the scenes. This tradition has now sparked conversations about where Benzema could fit in once he retires.

After years of speculation, Benzema finally addressed why he made the surprising decision to leave Madrid for Saudi Arabia. Speaking in an interview with Mega, the Frenchman revealed that his move was not about money, despite signing a $212 million-a-season contract with Al-Ittihad. “The other day I was with Florentino in Madrid. When he signed me [in 2009], I told my father that as long as he was at Real Madrid, I would be there,” he explained.

However, things changed. The French striker revealed that he personally called Real Madrid president Florentino Perez before making his decision, and their conversation was a key moment in his departure. “He didn’t quite understand at first… but I told him that the youngsters, Vinicius and Rodrygo, were ready,” he said.

The 37-year-old made it clear that he wanted to leave on a high, especially after winning the 2022 Ballon d’Or and leading his side to multiple titles. He also admitted that he did not want to join a club that could potentially face Real Madrid in European competition. “Real Madrid is the greatest club in the world, and I never wanted to play against them. I didn’t want to join a club like PSG or City, who could rival Madrid,” the veteran added.

What does Benzema intend to do after retiring?

Benzema hinted that when his playing days are over, he wants to return to Real Madrid in some capacity. However, he is unsure about whether coaching is the right path for him. “When I retire, I want to be close to soccer. Coach? I don’t know, it seems more complicated than being a player. I want to be close to Florentino [Perez],“ he admitted.

This revelation has sparked speculation that Benzema could take on an executive or ambassadorial role at Real Madrid, similar to what other club legends have done in the past.
