New report reveals Lionel Messi’s chances of staying at Inter Miami next year – and they are worrying for MLS and Javier Mascherano’s side

Julian Alvarez has found his rhythm at Atletico Madrid, earning consistent starting minutes that he couldn’t secure at Manchester City. After a standout first season in Spain, Alvarez’s agent has confirmed interest from a Premier League giant and shed light on the striker’s future.

Atletico Madrid paid $82 million plus an additional $22 million in potential add-ons to secure Alvarez’s services from Manchester City for the 2024-25 season, totaling around $104 million. The 25-year-old forward has proven his worth, making an immediate impact. However, Atletico wasn’t the only club keen on signing him.

In an interview with Win-Win, Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, revealed that a Premier League club had shown significant interest in the player before Atletico finalized the deal. “I confirm that Liverpool was interested in Julian last season (last summer),” Hidalgo stated.

The agent also addressed Alvarez’s future, noting that it’s not the right time to discuss it, as the player remains focused on the remainder of the season with Atletico Madrid: “As for the future, it’s not the time to talk about it, as Julián is competing in important tournaments and is fully focused on them.”

Despite potential future decisions, Alvarez is enjoying his time at Atletico Madrid. In his first season in Spain, he has scored 23 goals and provided 5 assists in 44 appearances, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top strikers.

Liverpool may eye a record deal

Atletico Madrid managed to fend off Liverpool’s interest in Alvarez at the start of the 2024-25 season, but as the striker continues to impress, the Premier League club’s pursuit remains strong. Reports suggest that Liverpool could propose a record deal to finally sign him after last summer’s failed attempt.

According to Anfield Watch, Alvarez is seen as a perfect fit for Liverpool’s system under manager Arne Slot. To secure his signing, Liverpool could offer Darwin Nunez as part of the deal, a move reportedly desired by Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

Liverpool has struggled to find a settled striker this season, and they were even linked with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, a player also courted by Barcelona and Arsenal. Offering Nunez (who’s set to leave the club next season), along with a cash sum, could be Liverpool’s way of finally landing Alvarez, a player they missed out on 12 months ago.
