The Joburg Open is an annual golf tournament held in, yes you guessed it, Johannesburg, South Africa. Each year the very best on the South African circuit flock to Joburg to take part in one of Africa’s greatest showpieces.

Within the context of the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour, the Joburg Open ranks as a prestigious tournament held on African soil. Attracting both local and international talent – it is bolstered by some of the biggest names in African (and international) golf.

Given its rise in popularity and sportsbooks now pricing up on the event, many sports fans have developed an interest in betting, and with a wide selection of markets and enticing odds on your favorite golfers, it only adds to the excitement.

The 2025 edition of the Joburg Open is sure to bring plenty of thrill while the top betting sites offer punters an opportunity to earn profits on their predictions.

The Legacy of the Joburg Open

Tournament Origins & Growth

The Joburg Open is a professional men’s golf tournament held annually in Joburg, South Africa. Established in 2007, this event is (interestingly enough) co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour.

This is an event intrinsically linked to elevating South African golf. Often, standing as a steppingstone for younger talent in the country. The fact that winners of the Joburg Open receive exemptions to participate in The Open Championships naturally adds a layer of opportunity – but also personal confidence and international rankings for a player on the tour.

Charl Schwartzel won the very first event in 2007 and then defended it in 2010. He then went on to win the Masters in 2011- almost instantly ensuring his name was mentioned among the world’s very elite. Brandon Grace secured victory in Joburg in 2012, enjoying a breakthrough year where he won four European events in the same season.

Other notable winners include names such as Richard Sterne, a two-time winner of the Joburg Open and one of the country’s most consistent golfers. Darren Fichardt won the Joburg Open in 2017 and added that win to a long list of multiple majors and an incredible legacy for young South African players.

Dean Burmester won the 2023 Joburg Open. He is also a multiple winner of the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tours, played in the US Open and the Open Championships.

The Joburg Open was historically played at the Royal Johannesburg course and the Kensington Golf Club. More recently, it has moved to the Houghton Golf Club and has embraced fast greens, unpredictable weather and the odd water hazard – as if any course in Joburg would be any different.

What to Expect at the 2025 Joburg Open?

The Houghton Golf Club will host this year’s event – known for its tree-lined fairways and elevation changes, it is not a course for the faint of heart. Those players who are able to embody a precise gaming style and a strong affinity with their irons usually stand a better chance.

The fact that the tournament is co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour, results in the fact that elite players from around the globe are brough to Joburg each year. The reward pools (or prize pools, if you will) are bigger results in a more competitive field and a more enticing weekend of golf.

The favourable conditions of recent years have resulted in low-scoring affairs and those players comfortable with their short game – putting in particular – tend to fair the best.

Rising Stars & Contenders for 2025

Some names to remember ahead of the Joburg Open – Tristin Galant, a leading player in his own right. He currently boasts an invitation to the Investec South African Open Championship and has reminded the country what he is capable of.

Jordan Wessels put his name on the map after leading the South African Stroke Play Championships – almost immediately ensuring he is mentioned when one talks about ‘rising talent’ in South Africa.

Ryan van Velzen turned pro in 2021 and just hasn’t looked back. At just 22-years-old, he is a talent worth noting ahead of the 2025 edition in Joburg. Jordan Schaper is another young talent with enough to suggest he has what it takes to reach the next level. These names highlight the golfing talent in South Africa and the depth we boast!

For international players, the Joburg Open has become a keyway to establish themselves on a global stage. Given its timing in the season, the Joburg Open has become an early chance for players to gain vital season points and status.

Furthermore, the fact that it is an Open Championships qualifying series event, means the top finishers can earn a coveted spot in the Open Championship event.

Expert Predictions for the Joburg Open

Thriston Lawrence has been identified as a strong early contender, his recent performances coupled with previous editions of the tournament suggest that he knows exactly what to expect and now holds a competitive edge.

If you are shotting between 18 and 24 under par, you can expect to win the Joburg Open. Favourable weather, coupled with a soft touch usually puts you in a great position. This is an incredible platform for players to showcase their talent on the South African circuit – but also to justify a place in subsequent tournaments.
