Sinner Jaunts Past de Jong

sinnersinner

Jannik Sinner secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Dutch lucky loser Jesper de Jong on Monday, advancing to the fourth round in just one hour and 35 minutes.

Playing on Campo Centrale before  Sinner overcame a brief lapse in the first set after losing a break advantage.

He regained control swiftly, breaking De Jong at 4-4 to clinch the set. The second set saw Sinner elevate his game, while De Jong struggled after injuring his right wrist in a fall at 1-3, 40/15.

The Dutchman received a medical timeout at 2-3, with his wrist heavily strapped, and though he continued, his movement and shot-making were visibly compromised.

From that point, it was non-competitive, but it was fair play for de Jong to stay out there, as many players would have packed it in.

Before that, he’d given Sinner a decent match, but the Italian’s precise ball striking is on another level, and his ability to play the most attacking brand of tennis on tour while keeping it at a high percentage is unmatched.

Sinner now faces Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round after the Argentine defeated Sebastian Ofner 6-2, 6-4. Cerundolo holds a 2-2 record against Sinner in their head-to-head, including a win over the Italian in Rome last year, so hopefully it’s a good one.

Jakub Mensik maintained his form at the Masters 1000 level, defeating Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 7-6(2) in a composed 89-minute performance.

Marozsan is a tricky customer, especially in Rome, but Mensik made inroads into virtually all the Hungarians’ service games.

The only real blips came when he lost his serve while attempting to close the match at 5-3 in the second set and squandering a match point on return in the following game, but he regrouped instantly, dominating the tie-break to seal the straight-sets victory.

The Czech now faces 30th seed Hubert Hurkacz, who defeated Marcos Giron 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 to earn a quarter-final berth.

Elsewhere, seventh seed Alex de Minaur and 11th seed Tommy Paul also progressed. De Minaur defeated lucky loser Hugo Dellien 6-4, 6-4, while Paul outlasted Tomas Machac 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4, earning his first tour-level win against the Czech in three attempts.

However, De Minaur is like kryptonite for Paul, and he leads the H2H 5-0. I don’t think American has the concentration levels to beat a guy like de Minaur, who gets every ball back. Is it time to go to the Tim Henman clay tactics?

In the day’s final match, Casper Ruud advanced when 29th seed Matteo Berrettini retired due to injury, with the score at 7-5, 2-0 in Ruud’s favour.

Berrettini, competing in Rome for the first time since 2021, had shown promise earlier in the tournament, defeating Jacob Fearnley 6-4, 7-6(0) in the second round.

After a competitive first set, his physical condition deteriorated. When down 0-2, the injury-prone 29-year-old informed chair umpire Aurelie Tourte that he could not continue due to the oblique injury that’s plagued him over the last couple of years.

Ruud now moves on to face Jaume Munar for a quarter-final spot. The Spaniard advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over 22nd seed Sebastian Korda.
