Inter Milan have confirmed coach Simone Inzaghi has departed by mutual consent.

Inzaghi is now expected to join Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal on a lucrative two-year-deal worth a reported £44million.

The 49-year-old has enjoyed great success at Inter since joining from Lazio in 2021, leading the Nerazzurri to a Scudetto, two Coppas Italia and three Supercoppas Italiana.

Marotta praise for Inzaghi

Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said on the club’s official website: “On behalf of our main shareholder Oaktree and the entire club, I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today’s meeting, which led to the common decision to go our separate ways. Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today.”

The only major trophy to elude Inzaghi at San Siro was the Champions League.

He twice guided them to the final only to be beaten in 2023 by Manchester City and, on Saturday, Paris Saint-Germain. Inter were no match for PSG at the weekend with the Ligue 1 side winning 5-0 in Munich.

Inzaghi pens emotional farewell

In a farewell message to the club’s supporters, Inzaghi said: “The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year-long journey, throughout which I gave my all. Every day, my first and last thought was always about Inter. It was then reciprocated with professionalism and passion by the players, leaders, and every single one of the club’s employees.

“The six trophies we won, including the Second-Star Scudetto, together with our Champions League journeys in 2023, and just a few days ago, are living proof of how much my work was supported by a shared understanding with my staff and every part of the club.

“I would like to thank the shareholders for their unwavering support, as well as the President and his associates for their daily help and constant dialogue. On every difficult day, just like today, I think it’s right to reiterate this sense of gratitude, even for the meeting that we had not long ago.

“We were sincere and together we decided to conclude this magnificent journey. I want to dedicate one last word to the millions of Nerazzurri fans who cheered me on, those who cried and suffered during the lows, and then laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs that we experienced together. I will never forget you. Forza Inter.”

It has been reported Como boss Cesc Fabregas and Marseille’s Roberto Di Zerbi are on Inter’s shortlist as they look to secure a replacement prior to the Club World Cup that starts in the United States late next week.
