Achilles problem means Norway’s Olympic 5000m champion is taking no chances when it comes to 2025 summer racing debut

Jakob Ingebrigtsen might have to delay the start of his outdoor season and miss his home Diamond League in Oslo on June 12 due to an Achilles injury.

The Olympic 5000m champion was due to race 5000m in Oslo with a possible attack on Joshua Cheptegei’s 12:35.36 world record, but the Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports that the injury will likely postpone his summer racing debut following a winter that included victories at the world and European indoor championships in Nanjing and Apeldoorn.

Ingebrigtsen has been busy posting more regularly on social media lately with details of his double threshold sessions, gym work and even tinkering with cars in his garage. But this week he is resting the injury in the hope it clears up quickly.

His spokesperson Espen Skoland told NRK: “Most likely, he will have to delay the start of his season. They’re working on getting it under control but he’s taking no risks.”

Oslo aside, Ingebrigtsen’s summer plans include racing in Ostrava on June 24, the Bowerman Mile at the Pre Classic in Eugene on July 5 plus a match against rival Josh Kerr over 1500m at the Diamond League in London on July 19.

He has a history of Achilles issues as he missed the indoor season in 2024 due to an injury in this area.

This week is also due to see the conclusion of the trial where his father, Gjert Ingebrigtsen, is accused of abusing Jakob and his sister.
