Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has admitted that he is “really concerned” about Matthijs de Ligt’s injury, following his side’s 4-3 defeat at the hands of Brentford.

Mason Mount gave United an early lead, tapping in a low cross from Alejandro Garnacho.

Luke Shaw’s own goal drew Brentford level before the hosts went on to take the lead as Kevin Schade towered over Tyler Fredricson to head home.

Schade doubled his account in the second half before Wissa made it 4-1. Garnacho and Amad scored late goals but they came a bit too late for United, who were unable to mount a comeback.

Aside from the defeat, most of the concern will be for De Ligt, who was forced off in the first half with an injury.

The Netherlands made his first start for the club in weeks but could only last for 35 minutes before he was substituted and replaced by Harry Maguire.

As he came off, De Ligt was limping and needed help from the medical team to move.

According to Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone Marshall, the defender left the stadium still limping but was not using crutches.

Amorim spoke to Sky Sports and said about De Ligt [as quoted by BBC], “I don’t know so I’m really concerned – not about Thursday. We took off Luke Shaw at half-time to protect and have players for Thursday, but I’m more concerned whether it is a small or big injury and thinking about next season.”

The United head coach said about the performance and the result, “I don’t know so I’m really concerned – not about Thursday. We took off Luke Shaw at half-time to protect and have players for Thursday, but I’m more concerned whether it is a small or big injury and thinking about next season.”

“We fought back and we were near – we tried to push and in the end we lose.”

He added about squad rotation, “It is good for the players that everyone is playing and we are preparing more than one game. We want to be competitive. It is really hard, but we are doing the best we can.”

“I have no doubt that we are playing better. So we have to take all the heat. At this moment we are losing games in the Premier League. We are fighting for the Europa league and Thursday is the most important game for us.”

On next season, Amorim remarked, “We are not ready to play Premier League competitively and be in the Champions League, but we need to win and we need to win this competition to give something to our fans.”

“Then we will have time to prepare the team to cope with those two competitions.”

He also spoke to Match of the Day and explained, “I liked (performance of) the young kids. I liked how we controlled the game without many occasions to score. In first 30 mins we struggle with set pieces but we already knew we didn’t have the height to fight that.”

“In the second half we are near the draw and we suffer two goals like we did in beginning when we suffer one and let it go. We fight but in the end we lose but good things for the future.”

He further stated about De Ligt, “I don’t know. We will see. I hope it’s nothing serious. We took a risk with Maguire. Shaw had to go out because we need players for Thursday.”

United have dropped down to 15th place in the Premier League standings. The Red Devils have yet to reach 40 points with just three top-flight games left to play.
