Jordan Henderson has returned to the Premier League after completing his move to Brentford.

The England international has signed a two-year contract with the Bees, arriving at the Gtech Community Stadium on a free transfer after he left Ajax this summer.

Henderson made his Premier League debut as an 18-year-old with Sunderland before moving to Liverpool in 2011.

He went on to captain the Reds in 2015, lifting eight trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League.

The midfielder spent one season with Al-Ettifaq before joining Ajax in the Eredivisie in 2024.

During his time in the English top-flight, Henderson played 431 games and provided 33 goals and 53 assists.

He has made 84 appearances for his country and was named England Senior Men’s Player of the Year in 2019.

And with Brentford losing club captain Christian Norgaard to Arsenal earlier in the window, Henderson’s leadership could prove to be a vital addition.

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews told the club’s media team: “When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision.

“We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he’s still phenomenally fit and he’s still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot.

“With the void of experienced players leaving the building – Christian Norgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee – it was important to replace that.

“But what Jordan will bring is that he has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years. He’s been at the forefront of driving for titles and Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club.”

Brentford begin their 2025-26 campaign away to Nottingham Forest on August 17, with Henderson facing former club Sunderland at the Stadium of Light two weeks later.

The 35-year-old will get the chance to play against Liverpool for the first time since leaving Anfield on October 25 when they take on Arne Slot’s team at home.
