Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been fined for breaching the Code of Conduct during her team’s match against UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025. The MI skipper has faced the action for showing dissent at the umpire’s decision.
The incident took place when MI was penalized for a slow over rate, resulting in fielding restrictions in the final over. Frustrated by the decision, Harmanpreet confronted the on-field umpire, Ajitesh Argal, in an animated exchange.
Controversial moment in WPL 2025
A heated exchange ensued during the match as Harmanpreet clashed with both the umpires and UP Warriorz’s Sophie Ecclestone. The controversy erupted at the end of the 19th over when umpire Argal informed Harmanpreet that MI would be restricted to three fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the last over due to a slow over rate. New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr, visibly upset, joined her captain in questioning the call.
As the discussion grew intense, Ecclestone, stationed at the non-striker’s end, walked up to the umpire to share her viewpoint. Her intervention did not sit well with Harmanpreet, who engaged in a verbal spat with the English spinner. The exchange escalated before the umpires stepped in to defuse the tension and restore order.
Harmanpreet Kaur fined for code of conduct breach
Following the incident, the WPL issued an official statement regarding the disciplinary action against Harmanpreet. The MI skipper has been docked 10% of her match fees for showing dissent at the umpire’s decision.
“Harmanpreet Kaur, Captain, Mumbai Indians, has been reprimanded and fined 10 per cent of her match fees for breaching the WPL Code of Conduct during their team’s match against UP Warriorz at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Thursday” read the media release.
“Harmanpreet Kaur admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.8, which relates to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during a match. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the release added.

Mumbai Indians clinch thumping victory
Despite the controversy, Mumbai Indians dominated the game with a stellar performance. White Ferns all-rounder Kerr led the charge with the ball, picking up a sensational five-wicket haul to restrict UP Warriorz to 150/9. Georgia Voll was the lone fighter for UPW, scoring a well-crafted 55.
In response, MI chased down the target comfortably in 18.3 overs, thanks to a fiery knock from Hayley Matthews. The West Indies batter smashed 68 off 46 deliveries, ensuring MI secured a thumping victory. This win propelled MI to the second spot on the points table with eight points, two behind table-toppers and already-qualified Delhi Capitals. However, MI has yet to officially confirm their place in the playoffs.
