Report confirms Manchester United interest in £60m transfer

Just over a month ago, Marcus Rashford was nowhere near Manchester United’s matchday squad. A player once seen as the face of the club’s attack had been cast aside by newly appointed manager Ruben Amorim, who questioned the forward’s performances and commitment. Fast forward to today, and the Englishman is preparing for a UEFA Champions League quarter-finals clash with Paris Saint-Germain, having played a crucial role in Aston Villa’s European journey.

But how did a player who was once one of Manchester United’s most promising talents find himself discarded so abruptly? And how is he now preparing to take center stage in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season?

Rashford’s rise at Old Trafford was the kind of fairytale every young player dreams of. Breaking into the first team at just 18 years old in 2016, the academy graduate quickly became one of United’s key players. His pace, skill, and eye for goal made him a fan favorite, and by the 2022-23 season, he had reached his peak, scoring 30 goals across all competitions.

But that success was short-lived. Rashford struggled for form in the following campaign, managing just seven league goals in 33 games, a tally that left both fans and the club’s hierarchy frustrated. His performances were criticized for a perceived lack of effort, with some supporters questioning his commitment.

In a shocking decision, new Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim decided to let Rashford leave on loan, believing that the forward was not playing well enough to warrant a spot in the team. That’s when Aston Villa came calling, offering him a temporary escape route and a chance to rekindle his form under Unai Emery.

Fresh start at Villa Park

A move to Aston Villa may have seemed like a step down from Old Trafford, but for Rashford, it represented a golden opportunity to rediscover his best self. Villa has been one of the standout teams this season, punching above their weight under the guidance of Unai Emery, who has transformed the club into a real Champions League rival to top clubs.

The 27-year-old, eager to prove his doubters wrong, has put in solid performances since his January switch. While he has yet to produce the electrifying numbers of his 30-goal season last year, his impact has been undeniable. He was central to Villa’s latest triumph in the Champions League, winning a crucial free kick that led to an early red card for Club Brugge in the Round of 16 second leg.

With Marco Sabbe dismissed for a last-man foul on Rashford, the Belgian side found themselves a man down, and the Premier League side capitalized ruthlessly. Marco Asensio, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, scored twice, reminding his parent club of his talent, while Unai Emery’s side booked a date with the Ligue 1 giant in the quarter-finals.

Rashford’s response to doubters

Rashford may not have been the star of the show, but his role was crucial. It is no secret that Rashford has endured a difficult season. His drop in form at United led to severe criticism from fans, with many claiming he had lost focus.

Last season, he scored 30 goals, his most prolific campaign to date, but the forward has struggled to replicate that form this year. His tally in the Premier League had dwindled to just seven goals in 33 appearances before his move to Villa Park.
