Middlesbrough have sacked head coach Michael Carrick after the club failed to reach the Championship play-offs.

The Teessiders finished 10th after winning just one of their last six games and the club have decided to part ways with the former Manchester United, Tottenham and England midfielder.

Carrick joined Middlesbrough in October 2022 and made a strong initial impression, leading them to a top-six finish, but they have failed to reach the playoffs in the two subsequent seasons and chairman Steve Gibson has decided to wield the axe.

The club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick.

A club statement read: “Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick.

“Michael’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club.

“We’d like thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future.

“The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”

Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper, who had a short spell at Leicester last season, is among the candidates to replace Carrick at the Riverside Stadium.
