One of the biggest letdowns of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is undoubtedly Atlético Madrid. Under the leadership of Diego Simeone, the Spanish side was expected to breeze through Group B — which included PSG, Botafogo, and Seattle Sounders — and was seen as a serious contender for the title.

However, Atlético has now been eliminated, cutting short its campaign in the tournament’s first edition under this new expanded format. Despite ending the group stage with 6 points, it wasn’t enough, and the team will now head back to Spain much earlier than expected.

In what was their final match and last chance to advance, Atlético needed to defeat Botafogo by at least a 2-0 margin. Instead, they managed only a narrow 1-0 win, falling short of the required goal differential. The Brazilian side handled the pressure well and secured their spot in the knockout rounds.

Atlético dominated most of the game but couldn’t find that second crucial goal. Antoine Griezmann scored the lone goal after a brilliant assist from Julián Álvarez, but it wasn’t enough to change their fate. Botafogo’s defense, led by goalkeeper John, stood strong and maintained the scoreline.

What’s next for Atlético and Simeone?

Looking ahead, Atlético Madrid’s next official match will be on August 17 when La Liga resumes, though their opponent is yet to be determined. The draw for the 2025/26 season will be held on July 1.

In addition to domestic competition, Atlético will be back in the UEFA Champions League, looking to finally win the prestigious title that has eluded them. Their European campaign will kick off on August 29 during the new league stage of the tournament. They’ll also be competing in the Copa del Rey.

Off the field, the summer transfer window may bring some significant changes. Ángel Correa is rumored to be on his way to Tigres in Mexico, while Rodrigo De Paul could also be on the move, with reports linking him to several clubs in Italy. It remains to be seen how much the squad will change before the new season begins.
