Oliver Bearman may have entered Formula 1 as a full-time driver for 2025, but his official rookie status was effectively erased by his standout substitute performances for Ferrari and Haas in 2024. Now, at just 19 years old, he prepares to embark on the most significant chapter of his young career.

A year ago, Ferrari junior Oliver Bearman was gearing up for what he expected to be a crucial development season as the official reserve driver for both the Maranello team and Haas. However, few could have predicted that his role would expand so dramatically, leading to three unexpected race appearances and ultimately securing him a permanent seat on the 2025 grid.

Haas has brought Ollie Bearman in to replace Nico Hülkenberg, who made the switch to Sauber ahead of Audi’s full-scale entry into the sport. The American team has also reshuffled its driver lineup by opting not to extend Kevin Magnussen’s contract, instead pairing Ollie Bearman with the experienced Esteban Ocon.

Ferrari will be closely monitoring Bearman’s performance against his new teammate at Haas, as they continue to oversee his development within their ranks. Although the British driver has been signed to a two-year deal with Haas, he remains a key part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Having joined the program in 2021 after securing titles in both the Italian and ADAC Formula 4 championships, he now carries the hopes of Maranello’s talent pipeline.

Sky Sports F1 pundit Anthony Davidson has emphasized that Ferrari will pay particular attention to how Oliver Bearman fares against his new teammate in their first Formula 1 season together. As a proven competitor with significant experience, the 28-year-old Frenchman will serve as a tough challenge and an important benchmark for the young Briton to measure himself against.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Anthony Davidson noted that Oliver Bearman, known for his impressive substitute appearances, would now have the opportunity to compete in a full Formula 1 season with Haas. He highlighted Bearman’s remarkable debut in Jeddah, where he stepped in for the injured Carlos Sainz and scored points, as well as his later stint replacing Kevin Magnussen at Haas.

Sky Sports F1’s expert pointed out that the young driver would be eager to begin a structured season, benefiting from winter testing mileage in the car he would be racing and being able to approach race weekends with a clearer strategy.

However, he also emphasized that Oliver Bearman would face a strong challenge from his new teammate, Esteban Ocon, who would serve as a valuable benchmark for assessing his performance. Anthony Davidson added that Ferrari would likely be closely monitoring the British driver’s progress, given his continued place in their young driver program.

Oliver Bearman Positioned as Potential Successor to Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari if He Shines at Haas

Oliver Bearman’s first full season in Formula 1 with Haas in 2025 represents a pivotal opportunity to prove himself to Ferrari. Although Lewis Hamilton has only just arrived at Maranello, speculation continues to grow that it is only a matter of time before Bearman secures a seat with the Scuderia. His performance over the coming seasons could determine whether he becomes the natural successor when a vacancy arises.

While Ferrari will be closely monitoring Bearman’s progress, they are unlikely to be the only ones paying attention. As Sky Sports pundit Anthony Davidson has suggested, Haas will also be navigating potential tensions within their new driver lineup. Given Esteban Ocon’s history of intra-team rivalries with teammates such as Sergio Pérez and Pierre Gasly, concerns have already emerged that his partnership with the Ferrari junior could lead to friction.

In response, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has made it a priority to establish clear expectations regarding team orders before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 16. How Oliver Bearman handles his battles with Esteban Ocon will not only be crucial for maintaining stability within the team but could also serve as a key indicator to Ferrari of his ability to manage pressure at the highest level.

Meanwhile, Ferrari remains mindful of its long-term driver strategy. While over 1,000 fans gathered at Fiorano to witness Lewis Hamilton’s first test in Ferrari red this January, the seven-time world champion also celebrated his 40th birthday that same month. With his current contract set to expire after the 2026 Formula 1 season, Ferrari will be keeping a close eye on the British driver’s development to assess whether he is prepared to step up when the time comes.
