Barcelona’s best wins in special season for Catalan club

Daniel Farke batted away questions about his future amid reports Leeds United could sack the manager despite leading them back to the Premier League.

The Whites secured promotion to the top flight with a 6-0 win over Stoke City last week, which they followed up with a 4-0 win over Bristol City on Monday.

Leeds will go up as Championship winners if they beat Plymouth Argyle on the final day of the season this Saturday. They are level on points with Burnley but boast a far superior goal difference.

However, Leeds’ owners are reportedly concerned about Farke‘s track record in the Premier League. The German was sacked by Norwich City early in the 2021-22 campaign having overseen two promotions and one relegation.

Club chairman Paraag Marathe flew in for talks with Farke over his future on Monday. Leeds have identified three potential replacements if they choose to sack the 48-year-old, according to the Guardian.

The Yorkshire outfit have made “initial soundings” towards Roger Schmidt, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Davide Ancelotti, son of Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian is current the assistant coach at Real, but he is expected to leave the club this summer alongside his father.

Asked if he need public backing from the club’s owners, Farke told Sky Sports: “No, right now it’s not about talks or the Premier League or next season. Now it’s just about this special day, it’s one of the most important days in the history of this club.

“I’ve always spoken about why I signed a long-term contract here. I wanted to steady the ship, and reunite the club with its fans and playing squad.

“I wanted to create values and bring this club back to the Premier League. The next thing is to make it an established Premier League side, because to be honest it belongs there.

“But in the last 23 years we spent just three years there, one really good year under Marcelo Bielsa and two years of struggling.

“At the moment, we are not allowed to label ourselves as an established Premier League side, but that’s the next step. The foundation is there, and now it’s about building on it.”
