Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has been left without a club after Boca Juniors terminated his contract following their Club World Cup exit.

Rojo joined Boca from United in 2021 for an undisclosed fee.

He arrived at United in August 2014 from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth around £16 million. Rojo put pen to paper on a five-year contract.

Known for his physicality and no-nonsense defending, Rojo’s time at Old Trafford was disrupted by injuries, which kept him from nailing down a consistent run of performances.

However, he managed to win over the supporters, who appreciated his aggressive style of play.

Across seven seasons at United, Rojo made 122 appearances for the club and scored twice. He lifted four trophies – the FA Cup, EFL Cup (Carabao Cup), Europa League, and the Community Shield.

He was initially loaned out to Estudiantes in January 2020 to regain form before he permanently left for Boca a year later.

However, his time with the Argentine giants seems to have come to a bitter end.

According to ESPN, Rojo is leaving Boca following their Club World Cup exit. He didn’t play a single minute in the US as Boca failed to win a group game. After their 2-2 draw in their opener against Benfica, the Buenos Aires side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bayern and were then held to an embarrassing 1-1 draw by amateur outfit Auckland City.

ESPN note that Rojo is no longer being considered by Boca boss Miguel Angel Russo. Despite the fact that he has six months remaining on his current contract, the 35-year-old is still poised to leave.

An ESPN correspondent said, “He will no longer be under Miguel Ángel Russo’s command. He’s with his family here in the United States and won’t be boarding the plane with the squad.”

“On Tuesday, the coach won’t have him at training.”

A report covered by The Peoples Person earlier this month suggested that Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami could be a potential destination for Rojo, and now that he has been released, this move could well materialise.
