The 27th edition of the Gold Cup is just months away, and before the action kicks off on the field, there’s an equally important event: the draw. This is where the fate of each participating nation is determined, setting the stage for potential glory or early elimination. The historical powerhouses will be hoping to avoid each other, while the newcomers will be praying for relatively easier opponents to fuel their dreams of an upset.
The tournament was known as the CONCACAF Championship until the name was changed and “Gold” was added. It started with nine participants in El Salvador 1963, dropped to five in Guatemala 1989, and has featured 16 teams since the United States, Costa Rica, and Jamaica 2019. This 16-team format will be reflected in the upcoming tournament, co-hosted by the USA and Canada.
The last Gold Cup draw, held two years ago, presented a difficult group for Canada. They ultimately qualified as runners-up to Guatemala, just one point ahead of Guadeloupe, a team they surprisingly drew with in their opening match.
