David Moyes is wasting no time shaping Everton’s summer transfer strategy, with SC Freiburg starlet Merlin Rohl firmly on his radar.
According to Kicker, the Toffees have initiated contact with the representatives of the 22-year-old German midfielder, exploring the possibility of bringing him to Goodison Park ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Rising Star with Untapped Potential
Rohl, who joined Freiburg in 2022, showed early promise but has seen his momentum disrupted by injuries. A torn syndesmosis delayed his start to the current campaign, and just as he returned to full fitness, a heel issue sidelined him again.
Despite those setbacks, Rohl’s versatility and technical ability remain highly rated. Standing at 1.91m, he’s capable of operating both in central midfield and out wide—qualities that appeal to Moyes as he aims to bolster a squad that endured a turbulent Premier League season.
Moyes’ Long-Standing Admiration
Moyes is no stranger to Rohl’s abilities. The former West Ham boss saw him up close when the Hammers faced Freiburg four times in the Europa League in 2023. Rohl’s dynamic cameo in the group finale at the London Stadium left a lasting impression on the Scottish tactician.
Price Tag Could Be a Stumbling Block
While Everton’s interest is serious, prising Rohl away from Freiburg won’t be easy. The Bundesliga outfit tied him down to a new deal last summer, and sporting director Jochen Saier is expected to demand a fee north of €25 million—more than what Brentford paid for Kevin Schade.
Still, Everton’s intent is clear: they want Rohl, and Moyes believes he can be a game-changer at Goodison.
