The Euro Cup 10,000m is a fascinating event. Held in Pacé, France for the last three editions, this is one of the 40 plus events shown for FREE via Streaming on European Athletics website. Phil MInshull provided thoughtful commentating, allowing fans to enjoy the events and not have to deal with constant commentating. Good stats, and the communication of exciting parts of the races are what highlight Minshull’s comments. He is a track fan who knows what track fans like.

The women’s A race was fun to watch, as were both men’s A and B races. Now in its 27th holding, the EA Euro Cup 10,000m is a fascinating evening of 25 lappers in Europe.

Jana Van Lent scored a huge PB in her win of the Euro Cup 10,000m. It was a first for her country, Belgium, to win the Euro Cup. To add even more of a story for the day, Belgium won the top team for women in the 10,000m, beating Italy by only 20 seconds! Van Lent’s previous PB was 31:59.6, :Van Lent ran 31:32.28 to win over Italy’s Alessia Zarbo, 31:50.62, and Chloé Herbiet of Belgium, 31:54.06. All three scored personal bests and Herbiet had just won the European Road Race Champs at the half marathon in April!

Efram Gidey gave Ireland its first win at the Euro Cup 10000m on May 24!! In March, at the Sound Running #10k Efram broke the Irish NR by Alistair Cragg by 11 seconds (Alistair is now the coach of a PUMA Running Club  in North America) with his 27:26.95. In January 2025, Efram Gidey had broken the NR for 10k by one John Treacy, Olympic bronze medalist (LA 1984, marathon) and two time World XC champion, with Gidey’s 27:43! Efram Gidey is a member of the iconic Irish club, Conliffe AC!

The 10,000m is a glorious event. 25 laps of chess-like moves, where the athlete red lines and then, with 800 or so to go, just turns into a sprinter! In the world in 2025, there are just a handful of events focused on giving athletes at all levels a chance to truly race over the 10,000 meters. The Euro Cup 10,000m is one of them. When Team GBR did not send a team, one Brit paid his own way and was rewarded with a PB! That is dedication!

Next year, we should have the Night of 10,000m PBs, presented by the HighGate Harriers in 2026. The event took a sabbatical this year.
