Edgar Berlanga’s post-Canelo comeback tour got off on the wrong foot today, as he came in 1.6 pounds heavy for tomorrow’s comeback bout against Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz on DAZN.
Berlanga (22-1, 17 KO), fighting for the first time since his one-sided loss to Alvarez last September, blamed the flu for his scale fail, but it’s a bad look. The matchmaking was already questionable; Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-0-1, 16 KO) has fought just twice in the past decade and has spent the bulk of his career at or below 160. Blowing weight ahead of a blatant gimme fight is hard to justify and yet another blow to Berlanga’s reputation, which he’s done his best to tatter since the end of his knockout streak.
The evening’s main event sees former prospect Austin “Ammo” Williams look to get his career back on track against capable veteran Patrice Volny, while Paris 2024 medalist Omari Jones makes his pro debut and Jamaine Ortiz takes on Yomar Alamo.
