Durant Leaves Court Early with Injury in Suns’ Loss to Rockets

Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant was forced to leave Sunday’s game against the Houston Rockets after suffering a left ankle sprain in the third quarter. Durant collided with Jabari Smith Jr. on a drive to the basket and stepped on Smith’s foot, causing him to lose balance and fall. He was unable to put weight on his left leg and was helped off the court. Suns coach Mike Budenholzer confirmed that Durant would undergo an MRI on Monday and would not join the team for their upcoming three-game road trip against the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, and New York Knicks.

At the time of the injury, Phoenix trailed 92-57, and Durant had played 23 minutes, recording 11 points and seven rebounds. This injury came at a critical point for the Suns, who are fighting for a spot in the Play-In Tournament, sitting two games behind the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings. Durant’s absence could severely affect their playoff push.

Earlier in the game, Rockets forward Dillon Brooks was ejected following a heated exchange with Durant. Brooks was called for a foul on Durant, which led to a brief shoving match. Brooks continued to argue with the referee and was tossed from the game after receiving two technical fouls. The ejection sparked debate among NBA fans and analysts, with some questioning the severity of the call.

The Rockets took control in the second half, outscoring the Suns 34-24 in the third quarter and eventually securing a 148-109 victory. Jalen Green led the Rockets with 33 points, while Amen Thompson nearly posted a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. For the Suns, Durant’s injury added to a difficult season, with Phoenix now sitting at 35-40 and struggling to stay in playoff contention. If Durant misses significant time, it could mark the end of their season.
