Last week, I asked the following question:
What would have to happen for you to stop being a fan of the Miami Dolphins, then switch to a different team or just give up on the NFL altogether?
Below are some of your thoughts and answers-
Miami7, like many other fans, sees all the rules changes as watering down the game and making it less enjoyable to watch as a fan.
Well….some of the NFL’s idiotic rule changes are creating some distance between where my exuberance for the game used to be & where it resides today. Being completely serious – I think the league should institute a rule where QB’s wear flags.
That said – regarding the Dolphins specifically….the day they signed Jay Cutler made me step away from football completely for that entire year. I’ve traveled to Miami (from Western NY) over 30x through the years for games – lived near Miami for 4 years and attended most home games during that period and now – have not been down for a game since 2006. Bad product. Bad organization. Huizenga to Ross has destroyed everything Coach Shula built. But somehow I can’t shake the Dolphins. I still follow, still try to watch every Sunday, but am pretty much just ashamed of what they’ve become. So aside from them signing Thurman friggin’ Thomas again or another Jay Cutler fiasco I don’t think any amount of humiliation & embarrassment they bestow upon us as fans will get me to walk away completely. I follow today with eyes wide shut!!!
Dolfan88 has a horrible doomsday kind of scenario.
If the team is sold, the name is changed, and moved to some other place. I will stop being a fan of the NFL. Can’t replicate the Fins history!
Jerylgilbert916, in response to Dolfan88, points out that what Bill pointed out has and can happen.
That is what happened to my brother with the Browns. He can’t stand the new Browns so he is a Raiders final score fan.
Spok507 is not going anywhere!
I don’t think I’d ever just give up on the Fins; I’ve been a fan since I was a little girl (Dolphins were nice unlike Lions and Tigers and Bears… oh my!). But… I think if they were perennial losers like the Jets or the Panthers lately, my interest would wane. I’d still watch football, ut I’d probably be more interested in college games where the turnover is constant and simply wait for the Dolphins to get some players I could root for again. My wardrobe is mostly aqua and orange, so unless I decide to start wearing beige a lot, I’m always going to be backing Miami.
Alpha6 is here for it all until the very end.
Fan of 56 years & still going. Seen five Super Bowls, one in perfection. Seen the 1 & 15, the mediocre, the wtf… seen all the cheated on (Patriots) & all in between. The most prolific passer was extremely entertaining & winning. As was the run-backs, WR duos, great defenses & offensive lines. The NFL sucks. And the only thing that will make me not a fan is death.
Louie the lobster is in until they ship overseas.
If they moved to another country.
MiamiSkye points out a sad truth about today’s fan.
The first incomplete pass even in practice you give up the QB.
The first punt of the season you give up on the offense.
The first time you’re down in points, you give up on the game.
The first loss, you give up on the season.
Any multiple losses results in giving up on the franchise.
These are very strict chicken little rules that many fans will abide by every year.
glen55 is just here for the QB but might have now grown feelings for the rest of it.
Interesting question for me. As I have admitted several times, I followed Tua to this team. He is my favorite player, and if Tua leaves most likely his new team will be the #1 team.
But I’m not as sure of that as I used to be. I have grown attached to the Dolphins:
I like McDaniel a lot, he is a stereotype-buster which is something I am always fond of.
They have 2 other Bama stars (I’m from Tuscaloosa) on the roster.
I enjoy chatting on this forum. I LOVE YOU GUYS (well some of you).
I have come to have certain investments in positions on particular issues that are often debated here, and I won’t give those investments up easily.
Worst case is probably that I would still follow the Fins as my #2 team and it’s even possible they would remain #1—although, whatever happens, my NFL affiliation will be greatly influenced by what teams Bama stars are playing far, as it has been ever since I started watching the NFL in the ‘60s. I am first and foremost a Bama guy. Tua is the only player in a very long while who has gotten me interested enough in an NFL team for that team to be competitive with Bama for my prime attention, but there are always new guys coming along, so who knows!
Dolfanjoe says he’s here unless they manage to drag the game down so far that we don’t recognize it anymore.
No longer a fan ? Dam they would really have to fu%& up the NFL even worse than they already have ! Maybe changing to flag football. Maybe the robots taking over ? Complete take over by gambling and never knowing what is real ! Becomes Wrestling, outcome already decided by the owners ! Hey maybe that way all the teams would get a chance once in thirty two years !
Francesco ITA believes that the league’s expansion could dilute it to the point where we no longer recognize it.
A leagues expansion would diminish even more the chance to win and so following the Dolphins would become, even more, a sadomasochistic experience. That could push me away from following the Dolphins so closely….
That’s our top 10 random comments of the night. If there’s a consensus, at least among the fans on this site, it’s that it would take something truly disastrous, like the team leaving South Florida, to make them walk away. Thank you again, as always, for taking the time to comment on our question of the day.
