There is no doubt that we all, as fans, hope to see much more success from our Miami Dolphins in 2025. Many fans are optimistic about the upcoming season, while others are skeptical or downright convinced that things won’t work with the current roster of players, coaches, and front office personnel. With that in mind, I asked the following question:
If things go south again, would you prefer to see the team promoted from within to help maintain some continuity, or would you prefer that the team start from scratch with an entirely new regime? If you want to start from scratch again, who would be your preferred head coach to be hired?
Below are some of your thoughts and answers-
cyberflea sees the whole thing being turned on its head sooner than later.
Considering the Dolphins are one of the oldest rosters in the NFL. The rebuild may come sooner than later regardless.
USMCFinzFreak is a cynic!
Call me cynical, but I don’t have high (or any) hopes that it will go right this season.
Balantine believes that if the offense struggles again, but Weaver’s defense performs well, then McDaniel should be let go and Weaver elevated.
‘If it all goes south’ is, I assume, a reference primarily to the offense. If the stuff hits the fan defensively as well, all bets are off.
But, assuming a top defense under Anthony Weaver and a offensive ‘meh’ that misses the playoffs, due to factors other than a Tua injury, and a subsequent dismissal of MM, here is my thought.
Hire Anthony Weaver to head coach.
First, if MM is gone and Weaver is not the new HC for the Dolphins, he will be the new HC for someone else after a top defensive season in ‘25. Second, he will plain deserve the chance, especially after a top ‘25 season. Third, the Dolphins do not need a complete coaching rebuild if MM is gone, just a more ‘professional’ HC who eliminates the sloppiness. Weaver could make the OC the play-caller, choose a new DC, and make sure the whole team shines.
But, I hope MM gets it together, and we make a deep run (2 playoff wins) this year.
Dolfanjoe thinks a poor draft could be a catalyst for a poor season and that McDanile could be the scapegoat.
If things go South again ! Which with a poor draft could easily happen ! Do not see anyone fired or replaced till the season is over. We will be going thru enough turmoil without removal of the staff. Grier could take a place in management and turn over the GM duties to someone else, McD would be the fall guy.
But nothing has happened yet. Tua is healthy ! We have a backup QB with quite the potential. What if the draft goes our way ? What if with a new line we can pound the ball. The defense does improve. Dam if i knew these answers now i could make me some big bucks ! A team with some dam good talent, a team with holes. How many will be filled for us to be competitive enough to win 10 games ? The draft and playing are the only things going to answer any of this. No i do not believe we are a super bowl team. But throw in the right draft this year and next, well we could be something ! Draft well Mr. Grier. It is as if your job depended on it !
FinsRegard wants us to examine why we only hire first-time head coaches and what is actually going on behind the scenes. I have no idea, or I would be killing it with news that no one else has. These are, though, both great questions.
At some point on this website, perhaps an article can be detailed as to why the Miami Dolphins have only hired first time NFL Head Coaches since 2009.Jon Gruden would be my choice as the next Dolphin Head Coach. Will that happen? No.This website has provided great detail and clarity as to direct involvement from the person with the most power with the Dolphins being right there in the middle of things on draft day.I would like to see more thoughts directly from the writers as to what they think of the Miami Dolphins process of doing buisness. The fans see the results , we wonder what happens behind the scenes.
Thomas23059 makes a solid point that there are many questions that have the same answer: It depends!
The answer, of course, is “It depends.” There are so many ways for a football season to go south. Grier has taken a chance on Zach Wilson. If Tua does something stupid and gets hurt and Wilson flops, then a total house cleaning may happen. Would Weaver be the new guy? Who knows. Might depend on how the defense does this year and who else is available next year. There are certainly paths open for everyone to stay even with a disappointing season. I don’t see anyone getting fired midseason unless things go really bad, though I could see players like Hill and Chubb getting traded. I think that Grier and McDaniel are tied together at this point, but I could see both of them gone and Tua still starting, probably for more of a run first coach like we saw with the Chargers. We know Ross watches Harbaugh closely, so if there is a change, I expect he would look to replicate the Chargers formula.
burstingfire has an excellent point. Grier should not be allowed to pick the next head coach if things don’t go as we all hope.
There is no easy answer. Interview both Weaver and other candidates. Choose the best candidate. But if the season goes horribly, Grier must be fired. Grier should not get to choose the next HC.
Spok507 wants everyone gone if things go poorly. Moving on from Tua after this season is possible if we are able to trade him after June 1st. The hard part of that trade is finding someone to take on his still high salary.
If it all goes wrong — including the defense? I’d prefer to move in a totally different direction and replace Grier, McDaniel and Tua — tho I fear that isn’t possible salary cap-wise until after 2026. My first thought would be if the defense performs well, let’s give Weaver a shot whether it be interim or for real. If the D is meh, then Weaver isn’t going to improve the team, so maybe let’s give Chris Shula a shot. Why not? Up and coming defensive coach, maybe he could bring some of ol’ grandad’s magic back. He’s the first name that popped into my head. This season as the Rams DC should give a good idea what he can do.
sdphinsfan wants Weaver to stay if the defense continues to play well and then get a good young GM from a successful team. If the season goes poorly, that is.
Like many, I like Weaver. And if the season goes south, but the D plays relatively well, I’d promote him. What I would do though if Grier and MM are gone is I’d clean out most if not all of the FO, particularly the scouting dept. I’d go find a young executive from one of the annually successful franchises (BAL, PIT, GB, PHI, KC, SF, etc) and let them clean house. In order for us to get it together on the field, we’re going to have to get it together when we’re deciding who wears our uniform.
dedstrk316 wants to see Weaver take over if McDaniel is let go during the season and see how it goes. Get another hot OC or QB coach if he doesn’t improve things.
Here’s what we should do in this scenario. Let Weaver coach the second half of the season. See that the players like him and are doing well. He’s given much needed energy and change of pace. Then, when the season is over, let him walk and go get another out of organization hot shot offensive assistant or QB coach.
Well, those are our random 10 comments. If there is any consensus, it’s that Weaver seems like a solid replacement for McDaniel if he can continue to put a solid defense on the field. Thank you again to each of you who took the time to answer our question of the day.
