Oscar De La Hoya says the Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly Romero event on May 2nd in New York will “surpass everything” fans have ever seen before in boxing. Devin Haney is fighting Jose Ramirez in the chief support bout.
De La Hoya isn’t saying who else is on the card, but fans’ reaction to those two fights has been lukewarm thus far. Rolly isn’t viewed as a top-tier-level fighter, so he’s a poor option for Ryan to fight. Haney’s fight against the recently beaten Ramirez isn’t big enough to make the card the biggest fans have ever seen.
Turki Al-Sheikh should start over and replace Ramirez and Rolly. It’s still early enough to find a suitable replacement that will make fans happy.
The “Best Event?
“In boxing, you have to keep your options open. We presented the deal to Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, and he turned it down. He had a fight already. We’re never counting out Isaac Cruz. He’s an exciting fighter. I love watching him,” said Oscar De La Hoya to K.O.Artists Sports when asked by Ryan Garcia didn’t fight Isaac Cruz.
“Maybe next time if Ryan Garcia wins against Rolly. Maybe Cruz is next. We’re always trying to make exciting fights. You mentioned New York. That’s going to be one of a kind. Cinco de Mayo weekend is going to be the most special night of boxing in the history of the sport.
“You hear about these great stories about how [John L] Sullivan and all these great fighters of the past fought in outdoor arenas in New York in Yankee Stadium. The Ryan Garcia fight against Rolly is going to surpass everything you’ve ever heard of, anything you’ve ever seen. It’s going to be monumental. It’s going to be extraordinary. It’s going to be the best event you’ve ever seen for boxing.
It could be an interesting card if Turki Al-Sheikh adds a good undercard to support the Ryan vs. Romero fight and the Devin Haney vs. Jose Ramirez clash. Neither of those fights will create a huge amount of interest from fans. Rolly has already been knocked out twice, and he didn’t look good in his last fight against Manuel Jaimes. Ramirez is coming off a loss to Arnold Barboza Jr.
“I do have to respect Haney for consistently wanting the match against Ryan. It takes a lot of guts and a lot of courage. I think Ryan Garcia is on a different level, and he’s proved that. When he fights on the 2nd of May, it’s going to be an exciting global event for Ryan Garcia and for boxing,” said De La Hoya.
Haney is obviously taking the fight against Ryan in October due to the big payday he’ll get. If it didn’t pay, he probably wouldn’t have agreed to take it.
