Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he turned down several offers to play in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, despite his contract with Al Nassr initially set to expire at the end of June. After opting to extend his deal with the Saudi Pro League club, the Portuguese star opened up about the reasons behind his decision.
Since arriving in 2022, Ronaldo has brought global attention to Saudi Arabian soccer, helping draw a wave of international talent to the Saudi Pro League. As the face of this movement, Ronaldo spoke about his future in an interview with Al Nassr’s official website:
“Since day one, I have been responsible for making a change not only at Al Nassr but in the country, and this is my goal. Of course, my goal is always to win something important for Al Nassr. I still believe in that, and that’s why I renewed for two more years—because I believe I will be a champion in Saudi Arabia.”
The Portuguese forward also spoke candidly about the offers he received and why he ultimately declined to take part in the Club World Cup: “I had some offers to play in the Club World Cup, but I think it didn’t make sense. I preferred to have a good rest, good preparation because this season will be very long—it’s the season of the World Cup at the end of it.
“So I want to be ready, not only for Al Nassr but also for the national team. This is why I decided to play the last game for the Nations League and then don’t listen to nothing, stay with this club that I love,” Ronaldo concluded, looking ahead to the 2025–26 campaign—particularly with Portugal.

After a disappointing season with Al Nassr, Ronaldo went on to represent Portugal in the UEFA Nations League in early June, where he helped defeat Spain in the final. With the Club World Cup on the horizon, Ronaldo chose to rest and focus on Al Nassr’s upcoming campaign, which begins August 19 with a Saudi Super Cup semifinal against Al Ittihad.
Family and fans played key roles in Ronaldo’s decision
Ronaldo’s presence has made a major impact not only in the league but across Saudi Arabia, where he’s revered by fans. As he reflected on his lifestyle change, he acknowledged the significance of that support in making his decision:
“This is why I’ll stay two more years—not only as a football player but as part of life here—because my contribution to this country isn’t just through football, it’s through everything. I want to be part of the country’s growth. And of course, the fans played a very important role in my decision. I know the people love me, I love Saudi people, and I want to continue giving and enjoying what they offer.”
He also highlighted the crucial role his family plays in his career: “My family always supports me, no matter what decision I make—not only here in Saudi Arabia but with every move I’ve made, with Juventus, Manchester United, Real Madrid. If they’re happy, I’m happy—and they’re happy here in Saudi. We have a good life, Saudi people treat us very well, and that’s why we want to stay here and continue our life.”
