The winds of change are blowing through the Spanish capital. With Carlo Ancelotti’s reign at Real Madrid likely to end after the upcoming Copa del Rey final, the world is now watching closely to see where the legendary Italian manager will land next. What’s surprising, however, is not just that Ancelotti may leave—but who is waiting to welcome him.

After Real Madrid’s shocking exit from the Champions League—a 5-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal—uncertainty has clouded the club’s season. Despite Ancelotti’s past glories with Los Blancos, including a Champions League and La Liga double, this season’s underwhelming campaign may be his last. According to widespread reports, his departure could come as early as April 26, immediately following the Copa del Rey final against arch-rivals Barcelona.

And while whispers of a reunion with Brazil’s national team have lingered for months, a new and more unexpected opportunity has emerged, coming from Cristiano Ronaldo‘s current side.

Unexpected approach from surprising side

While most fans expected Brazil to make the strongest push for Ancelotti, Saudi Arabia has reportedly entered the race in a dramatic fashion. As per FootballTransfers, the Saudi Football Federation has contacted the Italian tactician with an ambitious proposal to lead their national team. The move comes as part of the kingdom’s plan to elevate their soccer ahead of the 2034 World Cup, which they will host.

“The Saudi Arabians have been in contact with Ancelotti for some time now, making it clear that they want him and would outpay any other employer to get him,” journalist Duncan Castles told The Transfers Podcast. “They want him to be the first part of their programme to prepare a national team for the World Cup that they will host in 2034.”

The Italian coach, known for his calm demeanor and tactical wisdom, hasn’t ruled out the opportunity. “Why not? If I want to keep coaching after I finish here, why not coach in Saudi Arabia?” the Italian was recently quoted as saying when asked about a potential move.

His comments have only fanned the flames of speculation. During a press conference earlier this year, when jokingly asked if he would accept a $569 million offer from Saudi Arabia, he quipped: “Look, I wouldn’t even book the flight. I would walk with my feet to get there. No, I’m joking. I don’t need the money. The world is really changing, and we will continue to change.”

Brazil still in the picture

Despite the strong Saudi interest, Brazil’s national team hasn’t given up hope. According to reports, the Brazilian Football Confederation still views the 65-year-old as the ideal replacement for Dorival Junior. They hope to have him in place in time for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers this summer. Yet, they recognize he would not leave Spain voluntarily, and are now watching closely to see whether Madrid’s board pushes him out.

As Relevo reports, Los Blancos players themselves have voiced concerns about Ancelotti to club president Florentino Perez. Some felt that the team lacked direction in the humiliating Champions League exit, questioning the coach’s tactical setup. This feedback, reportedly coming from dressing room heavyweights, may have sealed the fate of the experienced manager.
