Christian Pulisic’s teammate Rafael Leao sends Milan a message loud and clear — And Barcelona might not like it

The storm clouds have gathered over Milan in recent months. A challenging season, a fractured connection with supporters, and a club struggling to maintain direction amid looming changes at the top. Yet, from the shadows of uncertainty, Rafael Leao has delivered a message loud and clear—one that might just change the tone of Milan’s present and future.

The Rossoneri recently reportedly received a strong and unambiguous signal from Christian Pulisic’s high-profile teammate, who, despite constant links to a move abroad—including a revived interest from Barcelona—has already made his decision.

The Red and Blacks’ season has not gone to plan. A lack of consistency in results, particularly at home, has left supporters restless and frustrated. And with every misstep, the spotlight has burned brighter on Leao. His form has dipped at times, leading to public criticism and whispers of dressing room discontent.

And while this wasn’t the first time the fanbase had turned on their star man, there were new signs that the relationship had reached its breaking point. Mundo Deportivo reported in March that the club was even considering dropping him from the starting XI, with Italian outlets floating the idea that the Portuguese star could be sold this summer.

Barcelona waiting in the wings

Naturally, Barcelona’s name resurfaced quickly. The Catalan giants had previously explored a move for Leao in the final stages of last summer’s transfer window. Financial limitations had halted any serious talks, but with Milan’s possible openness to a sale, Barca’s interest could reignite under new coach Hansi Flick.

Given his flair, speed, and versatility, Leao fits the profile of a modern winger that the La Liga giant craves, especially with Flick likely to reshape the attacking trident. “He could be a valuable addition to Flick’s squad,” wrote La Gazzetta dello Sport, suggesting a summer swoop could happen if Barca makes the necessary financial maneuvers. But here’s where the story turns.

Despite the speculation and criticism, Rafael Leao has no intention of leaving Milan this summer. La Gazzetta dello Sport revealed this week that the Portuguese winger, who recently shone in a 4-0 win over Udinese with a goal and an assist, has made his stance crystal clear: “Regardless of who will be the sporting director and head coach, he wishes to remain.”

His recent upturn in form, paired with the tactical shift to a 3-4-3 under Sergio Conceicao, has given him more freedom and brought back his attacking joy. Exempt from heavy defensive duties, the 25-year-old winger looked rejuvenated in Udine. He now hopes to guide the team to the Coppa Italia title—their potential second trophy of the 2024-25 season—and secure a European place for next year.

Star reborn through adversity

The Portuguese star hasn’t had it easy. This season has been his most turbulent in a Milan shirt. He was benched seven times in Serie A—something unheard of during Stefano Pioli’s tenure. And he has failed to score a single league goal at San Siro this campaign.

Yet, through it all, Leao has grown. Those close to him note that he didn’t enjoy being sidelined or having his status questioned. Still, instead of complaining, he matured.

“He didn’t like no longer being the absolute protagonist,” added La Gazzetta, “but this new situation forced him to mature, to push himself harder, and to become more complete.” His teammates have rallied behind him too, even imitating his surfer-style celebration after recent goals.
