Manchester United are planning wholesale changes in the summer as INEOS look to try and mould the squad according to Ruben Amorim’s preference.

One player who is likely to depart is Christian Eriksen even though he has started the last two Premier League games. But the Dane does not look like he is able to handle the demands of the new coach.

His passing was uncharacteristically poor against Leicester City last Sunday while he simply does not have the legs to last the full 90 minutes in English football.

The 33-year-old’s contract is up in the summer and the midfielder, currently on international duty, revealed that the Red Devils are yet to initiate contract talks and he knows that his time at Old Trafford is up.

Eriksen on leaving United

“I haven’t heard anything from the club, and therefore I assume that the collaboration will stop. That’s how I interpret it. My contract expires this summer, and I’m prepared to find something new. I’m fine with that,” he was quoted as saying.

“Where it will be, I haven’t decided yet. I haven’t tried to be out of contract except after the cardiac arrest, but that was a bit of a different situation.

“I’m waiting and seeing what offers come in. I’m not going to make any hasty decisions, but if the right thing comes, I’ll take it. But I don’t know what the right thing is.”

Regarding his future, the classy midfielder ruled out extending his stay in the Premier League while he also has no intention of moving to Major League Soccer or back home despite interest from multiple Danish outfits.

He still feels he has enough to play in Europe somewhere with reported interest from former outfit Ajax as well as Anderlecht.

“The intention is not to stay in England. I’m not going to the USA, we’re not going that far. We’d like to stay in Europe, but it’s too early to go home to Denmark.

Future destination

“I feel like I have some good years abroad left. When you go back to Denmark, I feel like it’s really about family and finishing your career, and that’s fair enough, but I’m not there yet.

“My ambition is still to play for the national team, and therefore I don’t feel it’s time to go home. That consideration has nothing to do with the attention on me, it’s about where my football career is. I’ve lived abroad longer than in Denmark, so moving to Denmark will almost be like moving to a new country.”

It must be a new feeling for Eriksen — not being offered a new contract extension but the reality is he simply cannot handle the rigours of English football.

Moving to a slower-paced league will suit him with the former Tottenham Hotspur star still capable of running the game with his superb passing abilities.

But for now, he must focus on ending the season strong for United. He still has a major role to play given the number of injury absentees.
